OPIE NOWHERE. 1 'HILL AND SHEUBB'S RECORD. By Teleeranh.-Press Association.) Auckland, January 7. Tho Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club carnival was"held iii .the Do T main yesterday.' There was a'large attendance of'the public, and'some good, running was see.n. The. 'meeting was made especially interesting, by the presence of such athlete's as Opie" (champion sprinter of Australasia), Redmond (sprint champion of New South 'Wales), Kelly (champion high jumper), in addition to G. N. Hill, the local crack. Most of the champions ran unplaced, but put up good performances. In the mile, Hill attempted to break A. Shrubb's Australasian record of 4min. 22scc. The Aucklander, however, was not at his best, and could only manage to cover the distance in tmin. 25 l-liscc. The results of the principal events are as follow:—
100 Yards Handicap.-L. ,T. Mark (61yds.). 1; M. Kalriian (11yds.), 2; C. N. Creeks (31yds.), 3. Won by a yard. Opie, in his heat, ran last nil the way from scratch. Redmond, who qualified "for the final, did not start. 75 Yards Invitation Race.—This was a race between If. Opie (Australasian ehani-' jiion) and I'. T. Redmond (champion of New South Wales). From a good start lirdmond got well away, and won My two yards in 7 3-ssec. The winner was loudly cheered for his performance. Mile Handicap.—A. A. Doruior (65yds.), ■1; T. A. "Saiiisbiiry (190 yds.),' 2; ({. N. Hill (scr.), 3: Dorinor put up a great, race, and Hill failed to gel; level With the first" two men. Time, Imin. 21 2-ssec. High Jump.—The jump resolved -itself into a contest between L. 11. Kelly (Victoria's champion high jumper), Winkelmarin (6in.), and Laurie (6in.). Kelly, from the scratch mark, failed rat 6ft. the other two failing at aft. 6in. As this, with the handicaps, put the three, men equal, another trial was held with the bar raised half an inch above, the heights at. which the men succeeded, but all failed to c|ear it, and the competitors named were consequently placed level. 220 Yards Handicap.—L. J. Marks (9yds.}, 1; B, 11. I'ordham (22yd5.),. 2; M. Kalman (22yds.), 3. Opie won his heat," but, in the final, he was three yards behind the third man in fifth position. Time, 21 3-ssec. 220 Yards Hurdles.—J. D. Stewart (syds.), 1; L. W. Basley (2yds.), 2; W. H. Kaighan (owe 10yds.), 3. Won by three yards. Time, 30 4-ssee. Dorinor, who put up such a great, race in the mile, also annexed the 880 Yards Handicap and the 440 Yards. Opie, Kedmond, Kelly, Carter, and Kaighan were scratched for the latter event. Dormor is a very promising runner from Opotiki. . ■' ■ . • '
