TOTALISATOR COMMISSION.
ON SHIFTING SANDS. (By Telczrarh— Press Association.! Auckland, January 5. The members of the New South Wales Totalizator Commission left this morning for Rotorua, on their way to 'Wellington. Mr. 11. H. Levieu, M.L.A., interviewed, said that much valuable evidence had been taken in Auckland. He could say nothing in regard to • tbo views of the commission, Mr. A. Bruntncll, M.L.A., said ho did not think the New South Wales Government favoured the introduction of the totalisator. Personally, lie thought the commission's report might result in a referendum. If that was so, he believed the bookmaker, would be abolished and the totalisator established. Mr. J. C. L. Fitzpatrick, M.L.A., thought that neither the Government nor Opposition in New South Wales wanted to legislate in favour of the totalisator. Personally, he did not think the commission's investigation would result in a referendum. If so, he believed it would result in the people rejecting both totalisator and bookmaker.
The commissioners were impressed with the remarkable orderliness and sobriety of tho great crowds at the Auckland races. It spoke volumes for open betting, and would give tho commission something to cogitate over for tho rest of its tour. The commission will spend several days at Rotorua, and will then go to Wellington and Christchurch.
