L. .Tones, who was wireless operator of tiie Montrose at the time of the sensational Crippen affair, is now wireless operator ol' the Aorangi. Mr. J. S. M'Mahon, of the Queen's .Theatre, Auckland, arrived here by tho Main Trunk express yesterday afternoon. Mr. A. M. Salck, well known in athletic circles, and late managing clerk to the legal iinn of'.Messrs. 0. and It. Becre, has commenced the practice of his profession as a solicitor, and has taken offices in Lambton Quay, next to tho Union Bank of Australia. Mr. W. J. White, of Hastings, who formed one of the deputation to wait upon the Ministers regarding the East Coast railway route, remains in town to take part in tho Northern Bowling Association's tournament, after which he leaves for the South Island, where ho will spend about six weeks' holiday. In addition to the list of New Year honours already published in The Dominion, the following distinctions have been conferred:—Sir i£. A. Stone, Chief .Justice aud Lieutenant-Governor of West Australia, Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George; Mr. Diddarns, Mayor of Brisbane, Mr. T. Fitzpatrick, Victorian Railway Commissioner, and Mr. A. Beau, 'l'asmanian Minister for Mines, Companions of tho same order j Dr. C. K. Mackollar, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 1885, and Mr. Clias. Hy. Goode, tho oldest merchant in Adelaide, and prominently connected with many philanthropic institutions and religious bodies, have been created Knights Bachelor.

On board the ferry steamer from Lyttelton yesterday morning wero a number of tennis players, returning home from tho big carnival held recently at Christchurch. Among them wero Messrs. Larliod, Seals Wright, M'Louglilin, Dunlop, and Heath, tho tennis championship representative players. Larned left by the first express for the north at mid-day, en route to Waiouru, whence he wijl travel to Taupo and Rotorua on a troutfishing expedition. M'Loughlin, Dunlop, ami Heath will spend a few days in .Wellington. Mr. Beals Wright is proceeding homo to America via Australia, the Philippines, and Japan. Norman Brookes, accompanied by his wife, has gone through to tho Otira, and will afterwards go to Rotorua, via Wellington, for troutfishing, a favourite sport of his. Major J. K. Cochrane (General Staff Officer at District Headquarters, Palmerston North), and Captain J. T. Bosworth (District Adjutant) are at present in town. Mr. Eric Ekengren, who was _ well' known in Wellington sporting circles some seventeen years ago—ho was senior slroko in the Star Boating Club —and who left New Zealand about twelve years ago to take up water-colour painting, has been attracting considerable attention with recent exhibits of his work at Stockholm and Gothenburg, being very highly commended by Professor Tal'ilberg, of the Royal Swedish Academ.v of Fine Arts, who expressed the.belief that Mr. Ekengren would take a very high place among his contemporaries. Mr. Ekengren intends to revisit New Zealand shortly, in sparcli of landscape studies, and" will probably hold an exhibition,

The Ven. Philip Walsh has resigned the archdeaconry of Waimate; but at the request of tho Anglicai Bishop of Auckiand he will retain the title of Archdeacon. He now resides with Archdeacon Willis at Cambridge.

There was a< Iflrgo gathering of membors of tho Wellington Licensed Victuallers' Association, including several ladies, at tho Masonic Hall this morning, to give practical expression to the president—Mr. John Bevcridge—of the esteem in which he is held, and also in appreciation of the valuable services he has rendered, especially in connection with the recent licensing election. By special request the secretary of the association presided, and, after referring in eulogistic terms to the energetic and able work of Mr. Bcveridge, he asked his acceptance of a solid silvor service of plate, bearing tho following inscription:—"Presented to Mr. John' Bcveridge by tho licensees of the city of \Veilingtori, in appreciation of tho valuable services rendored, especially in connection with the licensing election campaign, 1911." The health of the guest was then drunk in bumpers. Mr. Beveridge, in replying, feelingly expressed his thanks for the valuable testimonial, which he had not in the least anticipated receiving, as'lie had only done what he conceived to be his duty, and what ho had undertaken to do. In tho speeches made the recent election was as closely analysed as the absence of official figures would allow, and suggestions were . as to tho future action of the trade. Mr. W. Glenn, who was a member of the first All-Black football team, was yesterday returned unopposed to fill the vacancy on tho Wanganui County Council, caused by tho death of tho council's late chairman, Mr. D. Mason. Mr. Glenn is now fanning in the Paparoa Road district.
