THE KAISER.

. . -f- -— . OPERATION THAT WAS KEPT SECRET. •' A very interesting biography soon-will appear on the life of the famous surgeon, Professor Ernst von Bergmami, by Aromi Bucliholz. It contains a chapter full of heretofore unpublished . detail's, of an operation' which Borgmnim made on tho present ■ Kaiser. • Bergmann wrote to his wife on June 3, IS94:— "Sunday, just eight days ago,.the Kaiser invited, me ,to go yachting" with him. His .Majesty took me aside, and showed me a swelling on his lower jaw, the size of a walnut. It was movable and not grown into the skin. The Kaiser declared he had noticed the same for • two years. It had grown and was becoming tedious to' him, as people would always look at his cheek.. "Leuthold, his body • -physician, pronounced it a light swelling which could be easily removed." Bergmann, however, told tho Kaiser that the swelling was not so harmless, but was a saliva cyst, a little small sac close to the saliva gland of the ear. Bergmaim decided to operate, but adds that, ho was somewhat concerned, as the operation of such cysts' often produced crookedness of the mouth. - It was arranged that tho news of the operation should bo kept a secret, and even the Kaiserin was not told of it. Early on a Friday morning Bergmann went out to the Kaiser's palace in Potsdam. Wilhelm was still asleep, but a few minutes after appeared, his face was shaved, di£ifected and he was next put under the of cocaine. After the operation lire -Kaiser said that lie lyid felt 110 paiji. He went to tlio next room where the Kaiserin and her children wero waiting. They all.were very greatly surprised to hear of the operation.
