CRICKET. THE MATCHES TO-DAY. After an enforced rest of three weeks the raiik and filo of Wellington cricketers will havo an opportunity to play "gain their favourite gumo to-day. By Teleerapli—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, January 5. Tho Vickery-Priestly cycling team has retired. Nine teams aro still level. The latest record is 1548 miles. The majority of the teams are riding as strongly as_ ever. Thcro was some terrific sprinting, and many desperate attempts to win tho prize for gaining a lap. but they were unavailing. (Rec. January 5, 9.10 p.m.) Sydney, January 5. The cyclists encountered the ivorst possible weather conditions to-day. This morning tho temperature in tho 6un reached 150 degrees, accompanied by a strong, hot wind. Early in the afternoon a thunderstorm broke, and rain deluged the track. The riders donned weird protecting garments, from oilskins to. blankets, and some carried open umbrellas. Tho rain continued all the afternoon. The riding was very slow, many competitors being muscle-bound, necessitating continual massaging. Seventeen hundred and ten miles had been covered by five | o'clock. MOTOR CYCLE RECORD. (Rec. January 5, 10.25 p.m.) Sydney, January 5. Yee, a motor cyclist, covered the distance from Melbourne to Sydney in 31 hours 19 minutes, being 2 hours 44 minutes better than Formey's recent record. Wilding, writing to the "Manchester Guardian," applauded Larned's statement that America does not intend to abandon the Davis Cup, particularly as thero has been some talk among tho less sporting members of the tennis community in Britain of instituting a new series of matches wherein Australia need not participate. Nevertheless tho presenco of the Davis Cup in Europe is desirable. It would certainly stir international enthusiasm as France and Germany are now both capable of victory.
