DEATH OF OLD RESIDENTS. Timaru, January I. Two old residents of Timaru passed away to-day: Mrs. Frances Sarah Sealv, widow of Mr. K. 1 , . The fares collected by the Auckland Tramways Company during the twelve days comprising the Christmas and Now Year holidays show an increase of JMii Bs. Hunt, C. M. Honlf, J. P. Larkin. G. A. Martin, D. M. Al'lver, ami 11. R. Young; auditors, -Messrs. J. B. Whelch and W. S. Wheeler. A lengthy discussion ensued on.the scale of charges. In view of the large increase in the cost of labour and general charges, etc., which have taken place since the present charges were arranged, it was the unanimous feeline amongst members thnt the scale should be revised. It was resolved:—"That a circular be sent, to the various local committees asking them to submit to the council a suggested scale of charges suitable to their respective districts, such scale to be on the lines of tun 1303 scale." A statement in circulation that certain licensed surveyors have'been signing plaus made by frresponsible. persons was discussed, and it was agreed that steps be taken to put a stop,..if possible, to this reprehensible practice. ' UNIVERSITY REFORM. Auckland, January 4. t ibo cabled statement that tho London limes had sharply criticised the-sys-tem of the New Zealand University on the lines of the complaints made recently by the University Reform Association in Wellington referred to a Mr Henry Major, who is probably the Rev. Henry D. A. Major, who passed through a distinguished course at Auckland University College, graduating M.A. iu New Zealand, and subsequently graduating at Oxford. He is now Vice-Principal of Ripon College Yorkshire. He has gone through both tho Isew Zealand and the English university courses, and he is also opposed to tho proposed reform.
