Mr. W. A. Veilch, member for Wanganui, has resigned the position of president of (he Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, in obedience to a rule of the society, which provides that its president must lie a member of the railway service. Mr. Veitch filled the ofiice which he has just vacated during a period nf four years. The Wanganui branch of the society, at its last meeting, appointed Mr. Veitch a life member.

Mr. James B. Turner, M.L.C., Mayor of Suva, arrived in Auckland by the lalunc from Fiji on Tuesday morning and is staying there for a few days before proceeding on an extended tour to burope. Mr. Turner, who is a member of the Legislative Council of Fiji, says that tho political atmosphere of the island dependency is at tho present time comparatively clear, while matters generally aro pretty prosperous with, both Natives and Europeans.

The death took place at his residence, "Broclclev," Glen Iris, Victoria, on December 23, of tho Rev. H. T. Tucker, canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, at the age of 62 years. By his death, says a Melbourne contemporary, a conspicuous figure in Anglican Church history has passed away.' The deceased clergyman was educated at Moore College, N.S.Wi, and tho University of Melbourne, and eniered the ministry in 1873, when he was ordained by Bishop Perry. He was appointed to the charge of Christ Church, South Yarra, which he hold from 1880 until his superannuation in 1908, a period of 28 years. On his retirement from tho parish, tho late canon was presented with a souvenir of £200 from Uie congregation. He subsequently took up organising work at Fern Tree Gully, where he establisho 1 churches in several newly-settled districts, and later on assisted his son, the Kev. G. Tucker, in carrying on missionary work in West Australia. Deceased was a canon in St. Paul's Cathedral since 189!. Ho was the author of several interesting works, including "The New Arcadia," "After Many Days," and "Light of Latter Days." Deceased leaves a widow and three daughters. Judge Peters and Mrs. Peters, of Samoa, were in Auckland on Tuesday. Dr. and Mrs. Earle, of Wanganui, leave on a trip to England by the Tainui on iebruary 2. Dr. Roland Richtcr and Herr Oscar Anz, of Germany, who are touring the North Island, have booked for London by the Ruapehu, leaving on February 2.
