JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
(By rdecraph.-Srecial CorresDondent.) Wanganui, January 2. The holidays passed off without incideut, tho weather being fine, though marred by high wind. A large number of people went out to the annual AVaitotaru show, which passed off very successfully; Competition in tho various classes was practically confined lo local exhibitors. Tho event of (he day was the challenge leaping competition, which was won by Mr. \\\ H. M'Lean's Bill, with Mr. A. L'. Blake's Haddon second, and Mr. G. F. Moore's Sammv third.
Tho death occurred hero on Sunday of Mr;. John Eeid, ono of the oldest residents of the district. Deceased, who was 71 years of age, came to Wanganui in the early sixties, and went through all the troublous times of the Maori war. Tho late Mrs. Keid, who was very widely respected, leaves a grown-up family of five sons and four daughters.
