NOTES ON THE RACING. Full Rate, who'was credited with doing a smart-gallop since his arrival at Tauheriniku'u, and Merry Frank were the two best-backed candidates in the Russell Handicap. The former was trqublcsomo at the start. He did not begin as quickly as usual and never looked a likely winner. Longstep made amends for her failure on Saturday by going to the front early, and remaining. there till the'finish, though she had lo be-ridden out to beat .Merry Frank;: .Nbgativo was tho unfortunate candidate of the field for,- after being tailed off in. the. early .stages, he finished- very fast, and was close up third. ' • " ■ Turmi/s performance in the Riniutak'a Handicap on Saturday was impressive enough.to cause him to lie made a strong favourite in the Tawaha Hack Handicap, yesterday, After -getting away smartly he met with some interference during'the race, but came with a great dash in the straight, and just gained tho verdict on the post! : Florence Nightingale, who was in front all the way, had such a good lead in the straight that she seemed certain to win, but she just tailed in the last, couple of-strides. • In. the Tauherinikau Handicap Merriyonia was made a slightly better favourno than Undecided but, while tho former failed te..show up prominently at any stage, Undecided won ■ in a manner which suggested that he was unlucky to bo .defeated in the-Wairarapa Cup on Saturday. He was in a handy position yostcrday. when lialf. the distance had been covered-.and, when sent along.to overhaul British Maid in the straight, ho galloped resolutely,.and-never shirked ins. task.; How:he came, to bo beaten at ( arterton on Boxing Day. is difficult to understand... British Maid, ran another creditable race and Sir. Knox .showed up prominently at .the finish.
Itwas no .doubt, Ovation's breeding, rather than his form,, that caused him to be ..made-a very warm favourite, in the Wharepapa, Hack Welter. He flattered h* ,"> tr 8 £ o }'. apprti °, n of-tlie-journev. n n | s V n <l™s beaten ok of a place. The feature of .the race was the. remarkably easy, viclorv of Odessa who was conceding some of the candidates as much as 501b. He was-not asked to do- his best until the : straight waf entered and then he settled Hie opposition in a few strides and. won pulling up. It was one of the easiest victories seen' for some time.
Fourteen of the acceptors went to H™ post for. the Ruamahanga Hack Handicari and nearly, all the .joc&ys on the course were in coiiimi.ss.ion. . Some of tlio horsemen had a. very poor notion of .how'to best negotiate the home berid, and there was. a scramble there which threatened to end disastrously,, but one : half of the candidates r- T,. scattered wide, and serious rlanger.was averted. As it Was, however, Wee Rose lost his-rider, when lie appeared excellent chance of winning, rhis.leit Leapiiki in the ,lead, out he failed to. stall pfi a challenge from the avounto, Beacon. The connections of the latter horse fully anticipated the victory, and supported the Blerihei:n horse"accordThe Juvenile-Handicap saw two heavilyhacked candidates-Pe'roneal and Qbligant -sufler defeat at the hands of Imagination who, at oqe stage of the race, was conceding .both the first-named, candidates.a Lig start. The winner, who is from aji own sister to Elevation, is likely to improve considerably arid towards the end ottho autumn may be seen to advantage in more important .events. Her victory yesterday proved popular. It was a very poor field that contested the Firinoa, Hack Handicap, Lady Volley being made a. slightly, better ..favourite than Portland Lady. Neither of tho candidates named gained a place,. Daunton a rank outsider, winning rather easily from Rongo'mau and Kopane. Ton candidates went to the-post for the concluding event, Beacon, Negative, and BaUy Shannon being produced a second time. Naumai and.Blue Lake divided favouritism, and the latter, who jumped away from the barrier smartly,, won from end to end. Naumai was racing second at one stage, but was beaten-'out of a place at the finish. Lady Kilcheran, who : finished very fast, might have troubled the winner but for being badly placed in the early stages.
