NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By TelcKraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, January 1. The weather was perfect to-day, when the Auckland Racing Club fixture was advanced a .further stage. The principal attraction was the Derby, and great interest was centred in the meeting between Counterfeit and tho northerners. The Chokebpre bracket' was a strong order with-backers, and she., won, but it.might, easily, hare gone the, other way, for ■Emerson had her in trouble from the word''Go " and in the straight she fluked a lucky runon the rails. The attendance was again very large, and speculation was. heavy. As a result of. the fine weather of late the going had improved considerably, and fast times were the order of tho day. Watchchain had the services of Deeley to-day, arid tho change caused the public to.- mako him as good ,a favourite as Crqwji.rjearl and Outward, the trio being evenly backed. Bogey... led to the turn, where Outward on the outside and Crown Pearl on the inner went to the front in a. good_ race. Tho latter won by a neck. Tho Karanvu filly appeared to be unlucky,' and, had it not been for getting .stopped twice, she may have scored. Several horses .were better backed in the Hurdles to-day than, was the case on the first, two days. Amongst these were Continnance and Reumac. Mohtigo was also well supported, but he suffered on tho score of riding. Coutinuaneo made the paco, in the early stages from Black Northern, with the others bunched. Half a mile. from, home -Reumac ran to the lead, and was not again headed. The top-weight struggled on welli but both Sol and Black Northern headed him in the final', half-furlong. Tho Derby was generally regarded as a foregone conclusion for Counterfeit, and so_it proved,' for, after being pulled about a lot and getting into all sorts of trouble, she came, away in tho straight and won comfortably by a length. Midnight Sun and Miscount made' the pace for <dx furlongs, when Gpneral Latour rushed'to the front down the hill. Several tried to wrest the lead from him, but it was not until, well down the straight that the Chokebore filly ran to the front, and then it was quickly over. The. presence of H. Gray in the saddle was sufficient to make Culprit n strong favourite in the County Handicap, and she won from end to cnil with a. lot in hand. Ireland to-dav cariie in for stroug support, but, as on the first day, he got a very bad run. and finished out of a place, though he looked dangerous down the running. Faunus was sore and unable to jump off The big handicap was a splendid race, and resulted in a dead heat, after a great finish between the -placed horses and houltorla. Miss Mischief was a verv hot favourite. Passing the stand, .her rider took her to ,tho front, and (essayed to stay there down tho back. His "attendants were Maxwell and Domino Going up the hill, Maxwell got interfered with and knocked back, and this probably cost him. tho race.. Enterihtho.straight. Miss Mischief was still in front, but'strong challenges-wero thrown out on all sjdes. Bobrikoff, oil tho extreme outside, came fast, and appeared to bo winning,'but the weight told. Mks Mischief struggled on well, but Maxwell came fast, and got up in time to dead heat. Bobrikou" was only a neck away. Once again Ermengardo was made "a warm favourite for the tjro-year-old event, and onco more she failed. Tlicro was a lot of bustling at tho barrier, but the start was a good one. Erniengarde and Monoline we're first, away, and at a furlong Lady Georgia was nearest them. Monoline stopped at the turn, when* Ladv Georgia-tackled ,-.nJ soon dispo';?>l of Ermengardo. She had ;•<> bo .•iddmi out to withstand a strong ruD bv pjeriet. Hnskyne was. fractious at tho'.barrier, and-finished up by getting badly sway. 'J Royal Arms was' n. staunch 'favourite in tho hack race, and -after being in a handy position, throughout, he came out iu the straight, arid won easily. Jolie Fille and Ruafangata made the early running, but. tliQ latter compounded in the straight, whero the. favourite- camo . nn. and .won' easily., La Reina beat Jolie Fille: by-half a length. -•'-. .'.' .. . Sir 'Artegal was-favourite in-the. concluding" event, but victory went to Weo Olgai who, was also well -backed. The : winner' has., been most ''consistent of late, .but runs best'wben the going is soft.
