(Br Teleeranh.-Press Association.! Napier, December 27. Play hi the fir.st round of the Chess Congress resulted as follows:— .Mason beat James, Grier.-on beat Miles. Council beat Jourdain. Gyles be-it Sninsliiiry. Sovorius beat Jones. The gauic between Hicks and Rolling was unlim'shod when the second draw was made, and was adjourned-till b'elur'dny. The, following aro life authorised comments on the, respective games.:— Gricrson v. Miles.—Grierson played tho Buy Lopez, which proceeded on book lines for the imt few moves. After tho first adjournment Miles established a Mimcwhut troublesome-looking attack with his two bishops.' which- were rather stroiiEW , tlmn Gricrson's bishop. . and knight, but tho advance of liis king's bishop's pawn was badly timed, loading to a dangerous fork of qnecii with knight. This resuHed in Gricrson winning the exchange. Milus' being short of time, then nuulo a liasty move, with ono of his bishops, leaving himself open to mate on the move with tho queen. Gyles v. Sainsbury.—This gamo was a French defence, which proceeded on orthodox lines to tin; sixth move. Sainsbury then made, a weak move, allowing, Gyl'es to get his kniirht at Q. G. Gyles kept the advantage'till the twenty-fourth move, when Sainsbury resigned.' •■ Jones v. Severne.—ln this'game; tho opening was the l!uy Lopez. Sovernoadopting tlie Morphy defence. The game proceeded on the ordinary line* (ill the iiint h move, when Sevcrne, departing from the usual defence, made n weak move, losing a kuicht and getting into an awkward position. James. .Tiimes adopted the Sicilian defence. Mason won a pawn on the lath' move. Jones incautiously captured a pawn on ■ his 22nd move, leaving his king open to an immediate and fatal; attack by the ci mbjned rook and bishop. He at once resigned.
