THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING, SECOND DAY'S-PLAY. AMERICANS SHOW TEEIIt FOUIU (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, December 26. Tho New Zealand lawn tounis chorapiouship meeting was resumed at Lancaster Park this morning. After yesterday's rain Iho courts were in bad order, and the slight drizzle that tame oiv übout 10.30 a.m. made them still moro slippery. A. start .was. made with, tho, three, games at 10 o,'clock, but at 11,15 tho committee met, arid decided to postpone the ladies' matches until tho afternoon, but to proceed with the men's matches. , By upon tho drizzle had cleared off, and the.temperature became warmer. In tho afternoon,, the sun shono out, and, under these conditions, tho courts improved. There wae a very big increase in the attendance, and by tho time that, the "Btar" item came on—the match between Beals AVright and M'Uraghlin, the. Vni'cricans, and Rice aad Heath tho tralians—there jwas a large gathering present. In tho men's singles Kidston, who came over as a practice member of the , Au,«r tralian team, met \\ T . Pearoe. The first sot was won by Kidston after an even "go," but he look the next two sets easily. Tho Australian's accuracy and placing were too much for tlio Temnk« player, who was handicapped through 'Playing without spikes to his shoos.. • ■■.. A very oven and interesting fctrusgle was witnessed between F. S. AVildiuff ami A, S. C. Brown. Wilding won the three sets straight, but tho second , set went to o—70 —7 before-he secured it., , -Wild-, ing Eeemed to bo more affected by the slippery state of the court than the Auckland player was. ' ' ' ~ In tho eccond round Peacock met F. H. Wilding, and won three sets straight, Wilding played well iii tho second set, but Peacock's driving powers and fast service were too much for tlio young Christchurch player. Tho only match played in the ladjpfl' singles in the morning was that between. Miss E. Travcrs, tho present champion, and Miss L. Van Staverea. Miss Travels playa a fast and forcing gome, 'her driving being especially good, and she won fairly easily. Tho only other noteworthy feature in tho ladies' 6iugles was the fact that Jljsn P. A. Stewart, the Australian champion, easily defeated . Miss 11, M. Cotton,-*'!' Christchurch, who 'found tho pace '"jet too fast. ■:■' ■•■-. In the men's doubles, Werthcim,. of Victoria, and Kidston played an interest* ing match against Bonniugtoii and Shep.pord. Kidston, as usual, played accurately and cleverly, but Wertlioim un« erratic, aud appeared to go right, off liis game for a wliilo. A'lot of his stroke found the net. Ho recovered, however, and played well towards tho finish. Hid roinarkablo reach enabled him to put; in some fino overhead work, and ho wns good on the smash stroke. , Boiiningtbn and Shoppard both played a capable game, Sheppard's service nud volleying being noticeably good, while Bonuington's net play was also excellent. Brookes and Dunlop, simply did what they liked with . Lnmpc unci Billow, and the Australians hardly got. what might , ; bei called a practice game. Lampo got in a, few good «)iots, but Billow wns Yntlier conscious of tho inequality of the side?. Although beaten iu the next round b tho same pair of champions,, luid' by tlu samo margin as Lampo and Billows, A. Brown and Mqrpeth put up a much bcUei fight, pud got in.somo good forcefuldrivns. Excitement ranhigh when Wright and M'Loiighlin and Rico and Heath appear cdin the courts, and tho tpectn tors were hoping for a fine exhibition. They w(ifl not disappointed, a brilliant slrugglo being witnessed, Loug, hot rallies were frequent, and wnrp greeted with yells; cf delight.' AVright'played his usual safe game, and displayed great generalship in working till ho got bis opponent out of position. M'Loughlin. put great forco into his smashes and drives, but wun ugain erratic. His amash. to the Eido of tho court was a feature of his play. Heath' played' a" brilliant'game, his vollaying ana cross-court drives-bejug notable features of Ki6 work. : .'Kico's placing and net work wore also splendid. - The Australians played, a, beautiful partnorship, and it is safe to wy that uothins approaching this exhibition of-play hue been seeu in New Zealand Wore. Tho sustained brilliance of the rallies was altogether memorable. In tho first set tlue score was "5 all," and iheV- the. , Australians won the next two games, and thus secured tho set. In tho eecond 8«t Wright and M'Loughlin wore' 4—l, but tho Australians pulled up to 5 all. Then a gamo went to tlio Anicrieo.nsT-fi— ono to tho Australians—6 all. The noxt two went to tho Americans, and gnvn them the second set—B—6.' In the third sot the Americans got to 4—l, but.thjn, time, the Australians could not pull «p their leeway, and tho set went to the Americans— 6—3. In tho fourth set thfi Aiistralinus also failed to mako up. lost ground. After the Americans had"<;ot to ■!—2, tho. Australians could only wii ono game, and tho Americans took (ho set G—3, and the match. In the Ladies' Doubles Misses. Bninl and IC. M. Nniincley had an easy win iipninst Mrs. Berry and MissTimnis. The winners had 100 many powerful stroken for their opponents, Miss Nunneloy's fast services and cross-court drive being beyond their ability to reply to.
