The prospects of fine weather for Cup Day are at present by no means promising. Christchurch, December 25. At an early hour this morning. fairly heavy rain sot in and continued till late in tho afternoon, thoroughly soaking tlio ground and preventing'tho . resumption of tho Otago-Ganterbiiry cricket match. At the time of telegraphing the rain had ceased, but tho : . weather was not too promising for. to-morroiv. ■ •• Dunedin, December 24. .The weather is still very unsettled, and fho.prospccts arc anything but. promising. Heavy, rain fell early this morning, and, for a few hours .this afternoon, resideuts of Woodhaugh and North ■ East Valley had an anxious time. • In the-former locality Hie flood came down-suddenly about 4 p.m., and considerable, damage was done. ■ Fowl-houses and fowls were washed away, and, in many houses,, there were 3ft. or ill. of water. Citizens naturally made hurried preparations for exit, several.seeking refuge on the roofs, of houses. A wooden bridge: was partially washed away, and ii' mail cart had to bo .abandoned owing to the rush-of water. The horse and trap were washed away, tho former, being drowned. At; North 'Bast Valley there was about 18 inches of water in many houses,,' , and, in'some, it was4ft. or sft. deep.- In this locality, too, much damago was done. The. rain has cleared off now, and the Hood; waters are receding. It is. feared that .the flood.at.Woodhaugh was duo .to the breaking of the city reservoir, which is situated just beyond and above • that locality. • . Wanganui, December 15.
