GREETINGS AND SOME I'SOSPECTS.

After formal business had been dealt with at tho meeting of the City Council yesterday, Councillor Godb'er wished the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) a. Happy Christmas, and expressed a hope that when councillors next had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Wilford occupy tho Mayoral chair, ho would bo fully restored to health. These remarks were endorsed by Councillor Cohen, who said in addition that 'he hoped Mr. Wilford would reconsider his decision not to stand again for the position he now occupied. He was suro that councillors unanimously wished Mr. Wilford to act as Mayor for another year. Councillor Trevor spoke in a similar strain, and said he felt suro that Mr. Wilford's health was improving. Mr. Wilford thanked those who had spoken, and wished all present a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. His medical advisers had told him to go away on holiday immediately, and this was tho wish of his family and friends. A number of things claimed his attention, but ho probably would take a holiday. He lmd no dosiro at present to re-conte-t tho Mayoralty. Without health he would not think of taking it on again. Nobody knew what he had gone through during tho past ycuf. He had told his constituents on the previous night that ho intended to take a holidav, and that if ho was not fit when he canio back he intended to resign, so that some man who enjoyed better health could fill his place. As to tho Mayoralty, granted health, lie would consider standing another year, but at tho moment it did not look like it. No ono went awav, Mr, Wilford declared, whose place could not be filled. Councillors Shirtcliffe and Cameron also extended their best wishes and seasonable greetings to the Mayor, and Mr Palmer (Town Clerk) did the samo oil behalf ot the officers of the council.
