. *—— (Before Mr. W. Q. EidieU, S.M.) • ■ CASE OF MICHAEL LANE. PROPERLY A CIVIL ACTION. Michael Lane was charged with failing to account for a sum of .C 5 17s. Gd., received from Reginald Welsby in terms requiring him io account for "it (o John Lane. Mr. I'. W. Jackson appeared for the complainant; John Lane, but the defendant. who pleaded uot guilty, was not represented by 'counsel; Michael Lane.admitted having received the money, in-two separate sums, on behalf of John Lane, but added that he, had subsequently accounted for it. : His Worship, after hearing evidence on both sides, stated that he (lid not believe that defendant had paid the money over. It seemed, however, that he was acting ds agent- for complainant, and tho latter should have taken civil proceedings. Tho information would 'therefore be dismissed. • GROSS ACTIONS. On the information of Emily Green,' an elderly man, named Caesari Perrotti, was charged with-using certain language, at Lyall Bay. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for the informant, and Mr.. A. H. Hindmarsh for the defendant. The information was dismissed on the ground that J. there was no. proof that the. language-! had been-used, in a public place.' A cross action, Perrotti v. Green, was withdrawn by 'leave of the Court. _ . ARRESTED, ON ARRIVAL. On tho arrival. of one of-the southern steamers -yesterday morning, Detectives Kemp' and ■ Hammond ■ arrested Georgo QaVrihqrn. a shearer by occupation. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, .Hawthori\ was charged with stealing, at Dunedin, on Wednesday, a gold-mounted albert chain, valued at X!i, the property of W. A. Gustafson. Ho-, pleaded guilty, and was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment.' ;. PETTY THEFT. Joseph Wilson and Herbert 1 Reynolds were charged with stealing a teapot and cups, valued at 35., from tho Wellington Harbour Steam Ferries Company. Neither accused .appeared. A fine of 10s. was imposed in each case, and 12s. witnesses' expenses, this latter to be' divided between theui. . Default was fixed at -IS hours' imprisonment. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. Gus Bergstroun, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having absented himself from tho New- Zealand Shipping Company's steamer' Kaikoura without having obtained leave, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. , OTHER CASES. For allowing a horso" to be at large in liucklo Street, D. Gamandon was convicted and ordered to pay court costs, 95., and witness's expenses, 4s. Tor using improper language in Molesworth Street, a.young .man named Edward Patrick Owen was fined J£3, in default It days' imprisonment. John Ramsay, alius Lisher, and Thomas Robb, who'pleaded guilfy to charges of insobriety, were fined 10s". each,- the alternative -being '48. hours' imprisonment. Mary Patterson, for insobriety, was fined 55., with the option of 24 hours' imprisonment. William Telford and three first offenders, who did not appear ' to answer charges of being-unsober, wero ordered to forfeit their bail (10s. in every case). Two other first-offending inebriates wero convicted and discharged.
