The Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the niost graceful and impressive sepulchres of the world. It. was built by the Shah Jchan (1592-IGG6) as a mausoleum for the remains of his favourite wife. Muintaza Mahal, and he himself was also buried in it. The building is of white marble, with four tali minarets of the saino material, ouo at each corner. The whole rises from an elevated marble terrace. The enclosure, including the gardens and outer court, measures about (j-O yards by 330 yards. The principal gateway, measuring 110 feet bv MO feet, leads from the outer court info the cardens, which, with their marble canals and fountains and cypress trees, are almost as beautiful as the tomb itself. It is stated that 20,000 workmen were ineessantly employed on the .building of the laj Mahal during a period of twentvtwo years.
