Wedding at St. Peter's. The-marriage of Miss Ethel Hawthorn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hawthorn, of Hataitai, and Mr. W. J. Young,; second son of the late Mr. S. Young, uf Auckland, took placo in St. Peter's Church-yesterday afternoon. Tho bride, who was given away by her father, wore white; chitfon satin veiled with white ninon do soie. The veil of laeo was worn over a coronet of orange blossom, and sho carried a bouquet of white flowers. She was attended by six bridesmaids— the Misses Nirio Hill, May, Olga, and Gwen Hawthorn (niccos of tho bride), and Mollie and Patricia Shannon (nioccs of tho bridegroom). They all woro wliito embroidered frocks and black satin hats lined with blue and wreathed with for-get-me-nots. They carried bouquets and baskets of flowers. Their gifts from the bridegroom wore-turquoise brooches. Mr. Alick Pirie and Mr. Campbell Young were the groomsmen. After the ceremony the parents of the bride entertainedabout one hundred guests at Godber's. Mr. C. H. llarratt proposed tho health of the 'bride and bridegroom, _ Mr. Young responding. Mr. C. 13. Norwood proposed the health of the bridegroom, and Captain Light that of the parents of tho bride. Mr. C. J. Hill proposed the health of tho mother of tho bridegroom, and Mr.. V. Shannon responded. The Misses N. Toohill and Jlarbroe, and .Messrs. C. Young and M'Carthy contributed to tho musical programme. Miss Carroll acted as accompanist. Among those present were: Mrs. J. E. Cooke (mother of the bridegroom). Miss Hawthorn and -Miss M'Cready . (from Auckland), and Miss Hawthorn (from Dunedin). Marriage in St. Paul's. The marriage of Miss Margaret Hope Bartlett, third daughter" 'of Mr." John Bartlett, of Sidcup, Kent, England, and Dr. • Alex.'Tolhurst, son of Mr. G.' E. Tolhurst, of Wellington, took placo quietly in St. Paul's Cathedral yesterday. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. M. Johnson, M.A., and Miss Bartlett gave her.rsister away. The brido woro a frock of grey satin veiled with ninon, and a grey plumed hat': Miss Bartlett was in nattier bliie ninon, with a black hat, and Miss Tolhurst in white with a black and white hat. Dr. Maurice Earle, of Wanganui, was best man. A Social Evening. Yesterday evening Dr. and Mrs. NewmfiT) entertained;, at a social evening,** all those'who' mad taken a. part in assisting. Dr. Newman in- his recent election contest. There were many people present, and;, a very pleasant evening; was spent. During the course of" the evening 'Dr. Newman thanked those present for the aid given him during the past few weeks, ahd brief speeches were also made by Mr. C. K. Wilson, M.P., Mr. Bell, M.P., and by Mr. Fraser, M.P. Mrs. Newman, in a very brief speech, referred to the part which women had played in tho contest; and stated that-they would play a still greater one in the times to come. They would demand 'the highest- possible standard in their candidate in the future. The chamber was carpeted and decorated with palms and foliagi,"-'numbers of small tables, on which supper was-served, being placed about the room". The guests were received by Dr. and Mrs. Newmeii, Mr. F. Nev;man, and Mr. Gilbert, who recently filled the post of election secretary to Dr. Newman. Garden Party at Palm'erslon. A large amount of interest has been taken in the second annual show of tho National Sweet Pea" Society of New Zealand which opened in l'almerston on Tuesday last. Visitors havo been present from several of the outside districts, even from Auckland, and much admiration lias been expressed of the beautiful blooms exhibited. Yesterday afternoon a large garden party was given by the president of the society, Mr. Goring Johnston, nnd Mrs. Johnston, at their residenco "Oakhur.st." Fortunately the weather was "delightful (the afternoon being the first fine one for some days), and the pretty grounds were looking their best. Two large marqueos had been erected on the shady end of tho lawn, afternoon tea being served in tho one, and strawberries aucl ices in the other. A string band played delightful music at intervals during tho afternoon, ajid tho visitors strolled about the gardens and thoroughly enjoyed their beauty, particularly that of the rose garden. Unfortunately, Mrs. Johnston was suffering from a severe cold, and was unable to go outside. She received her guests in the drawing-room, with Mr. Goring Johnston, and was assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Ivebbell, of Alfredton. Mrs. Johnston was wearing a pretty black and whito frock. Her sister," Mrs. Kebbell, was in a black cloth costume, with whito revere, "heavily braided, and a large black hat with white plumes. Mrs. L. A. Abraham wore a- grey costume and a large.black hat with pretty blue plumes; Mrs. Fitzherbert, bluck dress and black picture hat; Mrs. Mellfop, dark blue coat and skirt,-trimmed with a black hat; Mrs. .Rosher, prettytoque; Mrs. P. Baldwin, dove-coloured cloth costume, largo tagel hat, with ceriso plumes; Mrs. Johnston (Highden), black cloth costume, largo black hat, with white plumes, Mrs. Higginson, grey, with a block hat; Mrs. Rosher, prettyblack and white striped muslin frock, with a black hat; Miss Moore, white linen frock with insertion and loco, "and large hat trimmed with lace; Mrs. Pascal, black and white costume, and hat to match; Miss Pascal, prottv blue linen frock, and floral hat; 'Miss Cro<=s (Hmvko's Bay), Wedgwood blue frock with cream yoke, and whito straw hat with flowers;-Mrs. W. Strang, blue frock with yoke beautifully embroidered with blue and becoming hat. There wore also present: Mrs. Broad, Mrs. and Miss Warburton, Mr. and Mrs. .11. Cooper, Captain and Mrs. Hewitt, Mr. Strang, Mr. and Mrs. T. Rogers. Mrs. Waldegrave!
