EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held yesterdav afternoon at the office of the Town Clerk, Featherston Street, city. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. 'W. S. Shortt), and Councillors Button, ilarcourt, Morris, Organ, Pilehcr, and Ross. Mr. G. J. Clapham wrote with regard to the council's olfor of .£l2O for the piece of bush land owned by him in the borough, and desired by the conncil for (i scenic and recreation reserve. Mr. Clapham pointed out that the prise, after deducting for the front sections not required by the council, was siightlv under the taxable value as shown in tlic council's books, and would hardly cover his outlay. lie was, however, willing to accept X-luO. Councillor Button, who had interviewed Mr. Clapham since the last meeting, movwl that the council purchase the land fit JMofr—JE3o in six months, and the. balance at 5 per emit. for ten years. Tho Mayor said the land was not worth the prica to the council. It would be valueless without tho bush, and that would soon be destroyed if picnic parties were allowed there. The subsequent cost would be the chief difficulty. The motion was carried by 5 votes to 2, the only supoorler of tho Mayor's view being Councillor Ilarcourt. A sub-committee was apnointed to interview Mr. Manth"l, Dr. Mackenzie, and Dr. Cahill in regard to land proposed to tie acquired from him by the conncil on tho foreshore.
