GETTING THE RESULTS.
RECORD RUN IN TEE SUBURBS. Mr. J. W. Salmon, the returning officer for the Wellington Suburbs and Country electorate, established something like a record in getting the complete returns for his district to hand last night. As at the first ballot, Mr. Salmon and his staff had the satno up-to-dato arrangements, and onco his three telephones started working they kept up an almost continuous ring until the whole of the thirty-nine booths had sent in thfir figures. The first tn come to hand was Plimmerton, at 7.3 p.m. This gave. Mr. Moore a lead of one vote, but Ohariu. coming to hand two minutes later, placed Mr. Bell in front, and thence onwards he maintained his lead. At 7.20 p.m. it was plain that Johnsonville was Mr. Moore's only hope, but. though he gained a majority there it was not sufficient to bring him no to the Opposition candidate. At 7.'tfl p.m. the only return required to complete the result was Hnywards. • This came through by telephone nt 10 minutes to 8 o'clock. The total number of votes polled was 5G63. or 287 fewer than at the first ballot. In 1903 the figures were: First ballot, 6955; and second ballot, 6615.
