A freight service has.been inaugurated on-the city train.system .which'is'likely' to develop into' big things. At present the new system in operating on it straight Inn from the' Thorndon railway station to Lvoll Bay-the farthest point on a line which traverses tho city. At present "No. 200," n strongly-built,. compact goods car, built on the principle of a railway goods car, but equipped electrically, as on ordinary car, leaves Thorndon .Station at .10.30 a.m., Oourtennv Place at U a.m., arriving at the Lvall Bay terminus at 11.25 a.m. It leaves that point again at 11..10 a.m., and reaches the station shortly after noon, lho afternoon freight-car leaves the Thorndon station after the arrivnlof tho 17 p.m. Main Trunk express, and proceeds via Jervois Quay (stopping at tho Queen's Wharf) to Lyall Bay, whero it arrives at about 4.55 p.m. , . Any box, ba:?, trunk, or parcel up to 211b. weight is carried the whole or any Jiart of tho journey for id.-, up to 501b., 6d.; up to 1121b., 9d., and so on, up to a ton weight. Attached to the system is d delivery service from tho depots on the .other side of tho hill. The charge for tho delivery'to the exact address is 2d. per bag or trunk. This means that an ordinary gentleman's travelling bag would be,carried from the railway station to nny address in Hntaitai, Kilbirnip. or Afaranui, for Bd. The depots so far established for the receipt of-parcels aro at the Thorndon Station, Cording's shop (Courtenay Place), Coatess Store, Hataitai, Eaton's Store, lulbirnie, and tho Lyall Bay Tea Rooms.
