NEW YEAR'S RIFLE MEETING. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION'S PROGRAMME. The programmo for the Wellington Kifie Association's meeting, to be held nt Trcntham on January 1 and 2 next, has just been issued. It is a most liberal one in regard to prize money, and is wuiuestionably the bast programme ever submitted'for a two days' shoot in the Dominion. The meeting should be a splendid preliminary to the annual New Zealand championship gathering. It will be conducted on the snmo lines as the next IJ.R.A. meeting, i'igure targets' of the same dimensions as those used at New Zealand's Bis-Icy will be fired at over the 300, 500, and 600 yards' distances, while the Hisley targets will be used at 800, 900, and 1000 yards There arc six matches counting for the championship aggregate. Kacli is a teu-sliot event, the ranges being 300. MO, GOO, 800, 900. nnd 1000 yards
On the first day. shooting will be conducted at 300, 500, and 000 yards, there being a special aggregatft for these matches. The highest aggregate scorer over those distances will win a hands Jine silver cup, presented by tho licensed victuallers—the cup t« l> o h e 'd tor tv.elvo months—and, in addition, win outright a three-guinea trophy presented by Messrs, Walker and Hall. There is a. special 8.5..A. prize for the highest nsrjrcjwte at 300 and 500 yards. This has been presented by .1. B. Clarkson am! Co., Ltd., sujc agents in Now Zealand for the Birmingham Small Arms Company. The prize is. a .22 W.O.M. rifle, its value, being .£1 15s.
The long-range ■matches will be fired on the second day. The competitor making tho highest aggregate scorn at SOO, 000, and 1000 yards, will win a handsome cup, valued at £■> 10s., presented bv E. M\ Hills and Co.
The championship aggregate prize list is a feature, of the programme, and should attract many maiicsmen from a distance. The competitor compiling the highest aggregate score, in (he. six matches will receivn a cash prize of .CIO, mid a gold iiirdal (value .EI) as.) printed by .Mr. W. H. Fiald. Tho second prize is ,I'j, third ,S2; there are five .£1 prizes and ten of 10s. each.
In each ol the sis matches there are fventv cash prizes to (ho vnluc ol' <£'2I 10s. iirst prize in each malch is £{ m>l a valuable trophy, second .Ci, two of .0, live <i Xi, and eleven of 10s. In addition to the trophies already .mentioned, the following firms have contributed prizes:— .1. Uuthie and Co. (value .El Is.), Jliulfield and Co. (.El.is.). ,1. Mvers imd Co. (,61.55.), F. (Jrady (,£1 Is.), "G. T. White (.fil Is.), British Empire Trading Co. (.E2 2«.,i, h'aiapoi Woollen Cj. (,C2 25.), Stewart Timber. Glass, and IJnrdwnre Co. (J!l Is.), W. Jl. Tisdall (10s. (!d.). A teams match, live ninn a team, seven shots at 300, r>oo, ami 600 ynrds, will be fired ou the first day. The first prize will be .£5, second £2 10s., and third .£l. Arrangements have been uiuile with the O.C. District for the issuo of freo i-ail-way passes to competitors for the usual 100 miles limit, and Ihcsn will be forwarded to competitors by the secretary of tho association (Hilloman 11. O. Browne, Wellington), when lie receives their entries, (ho closing date being Thursday, December 28, at (! p.m. If country competitors do not enter by that time thev will not bo in time, to receive their railnay warrants. The down Wnirarapii train on January I nnd the afternoon up (Wairnrapa train on January 2 will stop at Trent ham railway station. Competitors arriving by the northern train on Jnminry 1 will bo nllowcd to compete in ull events. . . . ,
Tho entrance feo is a very nominal one. For the sum of 30s. competitors can shoot in nil events (except the teams match), while marksmen desiring lo shoot, ou one day only will bo charged XI. The entrance tee l'or teams has been fixed at 10s. per' team.
Junior shots have, not; been neglected. ]j) e.ncii match thero nro five tyro prizes, and in addition there is a special tyro aggregate.
