MR. WILFORD'S MEETING AT PETONE. There vrcre about 800 people present at a meeting which was to have been addressed by Mr. T. Jt. Wilford. Owing to indisposition, Mr. .Wilford was not nble to be present, and in.his absence Mrs. Wilford addressed those present and was given a hearty reception. At the conclusion of her address, a vote of tnanks to the speaker, and confidence in Jlr. Wilford was proposed and carried with enthusiasm.

MR, R, W. SHORT'S MEETINGS. Mr. R. W. Short, tho Opposition candidate for tho Hutt electorate, addressed a number of electors at Taita last night, and at tho conclusion of the meeting «as accorded a vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr. Welsh, seconded by Mr. Kilminster. The candidate then journeyed to l'etone, where he addressed a v.ery large gathering at the corner of Jackson and Nelson Streets. A voto of thanks and confidence was rarried, and three cheers were given for Mr. Short. During tho meeting Mrs. Short was presented by the ladies present with a beautifjil bouQuet.

SPEECH BY MR. M'EWAN. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan addressed a crowded meeting, of electors in the Town liall, Upper Hutt, on Tuesday, Mr. Gibbes presiding. The candidate rnado it clear that he was an opponent of the pTesent Government, and "had been so for many years. Ho strongly denounced the waste and extravagance of the present Administration, and urged the need for less of the policy of "taihoa" in connection with land settlement and the development of '.he country's resources generally. Ho pleaded for a return to the policy of tapering off borrowing and self-reliance enunciated by John Ballancc in 1891. The candidate was loudly applauded when he resumed his seat.

OTHER MEETINGS. Mr. M. J. Rcardon addressed a v cll-at-tended meeting in the Oddfellows' Ilall, Petonc, last evening, and received an attentive hearing; and Messrs. Short and M'Ewan addres'jed large crowds in Jackson Street, Potone.
