HAWKE'S BAY.
REFORM CANDIDATE FIRST FAVOURITE. (By Talocrspli.—Hoeclal CorreSDondent.l Hastings, December (i. The night before the poll in Hastings is being marked by a considerable amount of; excitement. The number of candidates is probably the chief cause of the exceptional interest, but an added factor is the increasing conviction that the Government will sustain a sharp reverse. All the candidates are sanguine, . but the; "man in the street" places Mr. H. M. Ca jpbcll, the Reform candidate, an easy first for the initial ballot. The Government nominee, Mr. H. Lan Simson, is second favourite, but Messrs. A. L. D. Fraser and G. S. Clspham'are both equally confident of qualifying for the final round.' It is likely that there will be very even voting between these three. Mr. Eustace lane is .the outsider, and he is making i such a brilliant finish that somo consider his chances £00d. Certainly if ho had run anything like so well in tho early part of the campaign ho would have been right amongst the loaders. To-night all the candidates are speaking in Hastings, with the exception of .Mr. Lane, who is to address the electors at Wairoa.
