THE CANTERBURY SEATS.
(By TeleErapb.—3Dcclal Correspondißt.l .Christchurch, December 6. Political oxcitement has run high in Christchurch during tho last few days, and the poll to-morrow will undoubtedly be the heaviest that has yet taken place. The only change of any consequence that has; occurred lately is the access of interest in Mr. I'ethonck, the anti-Pro-hibition and Government candidate for Christchurch North. Mr. Petherick's candidature was at first regarded as a joke, hut his vigorous and unconventional speeches and his ready and witty replies to heckler,' have practically assured him sufficient votes to make a second ballot a probability. Mr. l'etherick will not be in it, ajd in the end it will not be surprising if the verdict of the by-election is Reversed. Dr. Thacker's chances for Christchurch East are improving, and so aro those of Mr. Cook for Lytteltou. ' Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Hardy are certain of re-election, and the same may be said of Mr. Nosworthy, thongh there will be a second ballot in Ashburton. Mr. Blackwell's chances in ICainpoi havo lately improved, but that is all against Air. Buddu.
