A count on Saturday night of the takings for Dunedin ana suburbs on Hospital Saturday gave a total of ,£645 lis. 7d., with several late returns still uncounted and further lists to come in. The committee anticipate that the total takings will reach a thousand pounds. RAIN IN AUCKLAND; Auckland, December 2. Heavy rain interfered with outdoor sports on Saturday, and caused practically all, except a few aquatic competitions, to bo postponed. Tho district cricket competitions wero amongst those postponed till next Saturday. • SEAMEN'S STRIKE UNLIKELY. Dunedin, December 2. The New Zealaud Federated Seamen's Union has decided not to break away from the Arbitration Act. The Dunedin branch, by a large majority, resolved to cancel registration, bitt the Wellington and Auckland branches did not favour the proposal. Fears of a big maritime strike are now very remote. INGLEWOOD BLAZE. Inglewood, December 1. Fire last night partially destroyed a two-story building owned by Thomas Drake and occupied by the Melbourne Clothing Company, E. Baker (grocer), T. Rolston (tailor). Tho Melbourne Clothing Company's premises w.ero completely destroyed, and tho stocks of Itolslxm and Baker were much damaged by water and smoke. Tho origin of the fire is a mystery. The place was left at 1 o'clock, and was not again visited till the fire broko out, about 9.30. There was no fire alight on the premises. Details of insurances at present available on tho building and £H0 on Baker's stock in the South British; •El5O on Eolston's stock in the National. HUGE CLERKS' MEETING. Auckland, December 1. An overflowing meeting of clerks held in tho Chamber of Commerce last night passed a resolution against the formation of. a union, and decided to petition Parliament for. exemption from the operation of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act.
