NAPIER-GISBORNE FERRY SERVICE.
(By Telegraph—Prose Association.) Gisborne, November 24. The inauguration of a ferry "service between Napier and Gisborne has been concerning the minds of the local Chamber of Commerce and it was expected tho Union Company would put on a boat of the Eotoiti class as soon as improvements had been effected in the river. The dredge has made more improvement than was looked for and it was anticipated that a terry service would be started this seasin. The company have now replied that they do not teel justified in starting tho Rotoiti, providing the completed extension of the breakwater and improvement in working conditions of the river. The matter was discussed by the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon and a member suggested that they should not let this matter rest, but try and get the service irrespective of the Union Company, as it was considered there should be an outlet for passengers between Wednesday and Sunday. The chairman t trusted the Union Company would not take off the Monowai and the Mokoia during the winter months. It was decided to -write to the Union company to see if vessels- of the Mokoia and Monowai class could not be kept on during Ihe winter months on the Dim-ndin-Auckland run, nnd in regard to tho ferry service to forward lists of recent soundings as supplied by tho Harbour Board.
