Dr. Abbott,, a recent, graduato of the Molbournn University, has been appointed to the staff of the Auckland District Hospital ns a resilient junior medical officer, lie will arrive in Auckland on December 10. Sir Frederick Troves, the eminent lhi-ti.-h surgeon, will visit Nov.' Zealand und Australia in a few months' time, lie expects to spend about night months in the colonies, and lie will visit both the North and South Islands of Now Zealand. Tlio death is reported of Mr. Abraham iS.indslein, formerly of Cliristchureh, and who has only recently returned from Australia, where lie has been engaged in opal-mining. Mr. Sandstein, who was in his fifty-first year, was formerly concocted with (lie jewellery department in Me'.srs. llayman and Co.'s Dunedin warehouse. Mr. J. G. Stott, manager of the National Hank of New Zealand, leaves rut a trip to England by tho Athenic on Wednesday next. During his absence his duties will bo fulfilled by Mr. J. Knox, manager of the To Aro branch of the bank. Councillor Wnkehnm, who has been a meml>er of the llntt County Council for 27 years, and chairman for four terms, has been appointed chairman for the ensuing year. When the election of chairman took place it was found that tho council \vas equally divided between Councillors Wakcham and Welch, and it was, after discussion, decided (o draw lots for the position, when Councillor Wakeham was lucky enough to win tho seat of honour. Councillor Itaggerfy has been appointed chairman of the Makyra County Council. He was elected to the position by the unanimous voto of the council. Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, left for Napier yesterday, where lie is to preside at tile hearing of tho drivers' dispute. It is anticipated that Mr. Hally will return to Wellington on Wednesday next, Mr. J. I'. Firth, principal of Wellington College, who has been granted _ a year's leave of obscnce, will leavo New Zealand on January 10 next on a visit to England. He will sail from Auckland by tho P. nnd O. steamer, and will bo accompanied by Mrs. Firth. Mr. Heine will act as headmaster in Mr. Firth's absence. Mr. J. Dignan, son of Mr. F. J. Dignan (manager of tho Asliburton branch of tho Bank of New Zealand), was successful in the motor hill-climbing competitions held in Leicester, England, on September 28. In the tourist trophy class Mr. Dignan was'first. He was alio first in tbo open class. The members of tho American Davis Cup team, Messrs. W. A. Lamed, Beals C. Wright, and M- E. M'Louglilin, arrived in Wellington yesterday afternoon by the Main Trunk express, and left tor Clhristchurch by the* Mararoa later in the evening. . Mr. James Calvert, a tenor singer from tho North of England, is setHins in New Zealand. Mr. C'alvert has excellent testimonials in regard to concert work done at Home. Ho will make his first public, appearance in Wellington at the Municipal organ recital on Saturday night.
