A Promising New Zealand Singer. Miss Valerie Collins, of DaTgavillOi whoso voice is being . trained under Madame Christian's dirccti'-n in Sydney, scored a great success at tho _ amnial concert iu the Sydney Town Hall ot tno pupils of the Garcia School of The "Daily Telegraph," referring performance, says: "Atiss Valerie Collins i sang in confident stylo and with dramatic spirit '0 l/ovc, from thy Power ('Samson and Delilah'), and gained one of the successes ot the evening, wluie the "Sydney Morning Herald" remarks: "Miss Valeric Collins, a much advanced singer sinco last year, should bocomo known, the line quality and vibrative resonance of ber mezzo voice in the middle and upper register assisting her to an effectivo interpretation of '0 Love, from thy Power.' The effect can be, and is, honestly, praised, but in doing, so tlio liftener has to feel grateful for tno recent opera seafou, as showing what star voices can do with Delilah's lovely ana. y'|* cr papers also speak in high, terms of tno young singer's performance.
The Ambulance Association. Yesterday afternoon a preliminary meeting of thoso' interested in the street col- . lection to bo made by tho Ambulnnco Association on Saturday, December 2, was . held in the Town . Hall. Mrs. Wilford presided, and .in a speech, expressed her sympathy with the morcment and hoped it would bo as successful as tho collection mado on behalf of tho Hospital somo little while back. The objects to which tho collection is to be devoted have been already published in The Dominion", and so far, thero appears to bo no lack of ready helpers to assist with the cause. In connection with the arrangements for December 2, it was proposed, and will probably bo decided upon, that after seven in the ovening the men who are willing to assist shall take the places of the ladies and go on with the collecting. Miss Coates will, as on former occasions, provide refreshments in tho Town Hall for tho collectors, and every person who has given a shilling or over to the funds is to ho provided with a badge, the plan having been found useful upon other collection days. This was decided upon in spito of the fact that some one, exceedingly world-wise, suggested it was possible that badges had been saved from past occasions and might be brought forward upon this without the shilling having been given. A better opinion of human nature was apparently the prevailing sentiment of the meeting and tho suggestion was scorned with laughter. No intimation will be given to tho public as to the amount gained bv various individuals. At the next meeting, to be hold on Thursday afternoon. of tho.- coming week, the posts. of allocation will be given out and various other arrangements dealt with.
