"TRADE" SPEAKER HOWLED DOWN.
ONE GENEROUS OPPONENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, November 21. An extraordinarily lively ■' meet ins marked by a unique incident was held at Anunoho last evening, when 'Mr. W. .1. Maguire, under engagement to ilia Patea Licensed Victuallers' Association, addressed a crowded audience in support of "tho trade." Hundreds wero uunblo to gain admission. From tho outset it was apparent that tho meeting was largely hostile to Mr. Maguire, who spoko amid a continual fire of interruptions, the strain of which, combined with the great heat of a closo night, almost overpowered him. Ho struggled pluckily on, but when threeparts through the address, and when dm audience seemed to be getting out of hand, tho liov, Geo. Tregear, a visilin? No-License advocate, whom Mr. Maguiro had attacked in very vigorous; terms, appealed to the audience to givo Mr. Maguiro a fair hearing, intimating that he would reply to tho charges made, against himself later on. Mr. Maguirn thanked Mr. Tregear for his actiAn, and continued the address, tout the interruptions continued. Finally, when on tha verge of collapse, and acting on' Mr, Tregoar's advieo, Mr. Maguiro was compelled to closo the meeting. Mr. Tregear theu followed with a few minutes' vigorous speech, and refuted tho charges made against him, and afterwards addressed a largo crowd ouUido the hall.
