DR. KARL KUMM.

THE FUTURE OF THE NEGRO RACE. On his journey across- North Central Africa Dr. Kumm was greatly struck by the inroads which Mohammedanism was making.among tho pagan tribes of tho interior. He traced out the border line between Mohammedanism and paganism, finding that, in some parts, the country had been absolutely devastated by Moslem slave raiders. Round Senussi's country many villages wero ruined and destroyed the result of advancing Mohammedanism, jt spreads under German protection in A'daraawa, and even in tho French Rhari protectorate, against the wishes of the French Government, which does not desire tho influence of Jslam umcug _ the siinplo pagan tribes. Tho same condition of affairs obtains in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Interviewed by Reuters on his return from Africa, Dr. Kumm made this statement:— "That Mohammedanism is spreading there cannot bo the slightest, doubt, and that it is spreading as the result of tho conquest of tho regions in question by Europeans is-evident to any student of tho' geographical conditions of the- political economy of Central Africa. The border war of five centuries between paganism and tho Crescent faith in the' mountain recions of Adamawa, in the Kordofan Hills, and in the S.hari Valley has eomo to an end. Mohammedan traders and religious emissaries, without having any definite Mohammedan missionary ,Or-gaiiisnti-Mi behind thein, are penetrating into the southern parts of the Sudan, and arc extending their influence to West Africa, East Africa, and South Africa, and this may end in the whole of Africa becoming a Mohammedan continent, with only South Africa, parts of British East Africa, Uganda, and Aby-s.Mn.ia, nominally Christian. Now converts to Islam aro apt to become imbued with the spirit of fanaticism, which, under certain conditions, may havo very serious results.
