THE M.C.C. ELEVEN
AT MELBOURNE. MORE SLOW ENGLISH BATTING. "IRONICAL CHEEKS." By lVlecraph—Press AEsociation-CopyrlzM (Eec. November 20, 8.55 p.m.) Melbourne, November 20. Ideal weather and a good wicket marked tho third display in tho match M.C.C. Eleven v. Victoria. Foster and Douglas renewed the attack, Foster was bowling well, turning from tho off, and making great pace from tho pitch. The runs came slowly, and, presently, Laver was caught low in the slips. Armstrong was dismissed second ball, iu response to a unanimous appeal for a catch at the wicket. Matthews came in, and saw Kortlang clean bowled by Hitch, who had relieved Foster, tho total then reading 235. Korllang had been at the wicket for 218 minutes, and had played steadily right through. His scoro included four fourers. At this, thrco wickets had fallen without a run being added. The English bowling was of a higher standard than had been tho case on Saturday. When Matthews was dismissed, Hitch, whoso average had read none for 26 on Saturday, had taken two wickets for 35 runs. Ho was assisted by the wind. The remainder of the batting was indifferent. Tho innings lasted 273 minutes. In to-day's bowling Douglas captured three wickets for 9 runs, and Hitch four for 21. Hobbs and Kinnear opened England's second innings against the bowling of Laver and Macrow. Hobbs began stylishly, and Kinnear was more confident that he had been in tho first innings. He had been batting forty-one minutes when ho was dismissed.
Rhodes, when 2, gave a chance of stumping off Matthews. Tho firut 50 occupied fifty-five minutes. Hobbs gave a difficult chance at point off Laver wlicn 31.- • At Gl, Kyle relieved Laver, who had bowled thirteen oyers, seven of them being maidens, and had taken ono wicket for 19. Hobbs played charming cricket on both sides of the wicket, the feature being his skilful and effective placing. Ho put on his first 50 in ninety-three minutes. Laver was absent after tea, resting an injured leg, and Kyle and Macrow took up tho bowling. Tho hundred was registered in 10") minutes, and then the pace slowed considerably. Kyle bowled twelve overs, fivo of them being maidens, for eleven runs. At 112 Armstrong relieved Macrow with the ball. By this time the crowd were impatient at tho slowness of tho scoring and they cheered ironically when Hobbs drovo Kyle hard to the off for four. Hobbs waved his bat in acknowledgment. Notwithstanding the slow scoring the batting was attractive, Hobbs especially off-driving and cutting well. The Englishmen reached 150 after 153 minutes. When he was 49 Rhodes was nearly run out, Carkeek just failing to take the return. Hobbs, when 82, was missed at.mid-on off Kyle by Spencer, a substitute, and Armstrong, fielding at slip, missed Rhodes when ho was 52 off Kyle. Hobbs was eventually caught at mid-off. He had hatted three hours, and hit sis fourers. Rhodes was in for'l44 minutes before he gained his first fourer with a nice offdrive. Smith was short-lived. The fielding wa3 good, and the attendance about 6000. The wicket is lasting well. England.—First Innings. Hobbs, c. Laver, b. Matthews 21 Kinnear, c. Kyle, b. Macrow 32 Rhodes, 1.b.w., b.
