Warner in still confined (o brd, but in recovering from an attack of gastritis. Douglas won tho lom from Annfilrong, and Hobbs and Kinnear opened for M.C.C., Macrow and bowling. Ilobbs Bcorcd quickly, mostly by clean, crisp, well-timed cutting, but, in attempting bo drive MatthowH, who bad relieved Macrotv, ho mado a mishit, and Laver, helding at point, brought off a magnificent one-handed catch. Rhodes filled tho gap, and the ecoring slowed, tho lirst fifty occupying an hour. Kinnear was seventy minutes in roaching nineteen, whilo Rhodes scored tho same number in twenty-oight minutes. At tho luncheon adjournment seventy was on tho board, with ono wicket down. Tho batting had boen steady and cautious, tho attack keen, and tho fielding smart. When 2S Kinnoar gave a clianco offJlacroiv to Carkcek at tho wicket. Tho century occupied IGS minutes, but eventually Rhodes was beaten by Lavor, He got his log in front. Mead, tho incomer, soon lost Kinnear, who had batted carefully, scoring mostly on tho leg side. Hearue batted diffidently. Foster, after making a single, was badly missed by Macrow at mid-on, off Kyle. Mead shaped freely, tho feature of his innings being fino placing, chiefly on tho on side. He was at tho wicket for sevontysk minutes, and hit four fours. Kyle bowled excellently, and, at one stage, he sent down twelve overs (of which eight were maidens) yielding 11 runs. He is a fast medium, and keeps a fine length. On resuming, the batsmen were watchful. Foster, with a lovely back-cut off Laver for three, secured 35-the top score so far as tho match had gone. Tho first 150 runs occupied 180 minutes, and there was nothing attractive about the batting for a long period. Foster reached fifty after ninety minutes, and was then badly missed at mid-on by Smith, off Kyle. Ho then livened up slightly, and got in eomo pretty cuts and glances. A total of 200 was hoisted after 210 minutes' play. Douglas, after seventy-four minutes, reached doublo figures, and tho spectators cheered ironically. Douglas, however, was not pertubed by tho demonstration. Foster now showed attractive and stylish cricket, hitting on both sides of tho wicket, and he reached his hundred after 134 minutes. His scoro included twelve fours, and he was eventually caught in tho Blips. On tho whole England's batting was unimpressive, and at times tedious and lacking enterprise, especially before tea. Tho exports' opinion, like JlacLaren's, is that older players aro preferablo to bo many young ones for the tour. England.—First Innings. Hobbs, c. Laver, b. Matthews 21 Kinnoar, c. Kj'le, b.
