Building permits covering contracts to the estimated value of ,£919 were issued by the Petone Borough Council during the month of October. Since the beginning of the year the total number of building permits issued au aggregate value of .£12,170 ss. A petition is being circulated for signature among the residents of lJataitai asking the Education Board to build and equip a side school in that district. For the Civil Service junior and intermediate examinations, which are to be held at the various centres this month, there is a total of 3IH candidate?, of whom 1825 aro candidates for tho Civil Service Junior Examination and for Senior Board Scholarships, and 1289 are noncompetitive candidates for tho intermediate examination—an increase over tho figures in for November, 1910, of 320. For tlio Junior National Scholarship and junior fret place examination, to be conducted on November 30 and December 1, there aro 1714 scholarship candidates, and 1032 free place (non-scholarship) candi-' dates, making a total of 271(1—an increaso of 170 over last year. Iu tiio NovemberDecember examinations, therefore, there is for this year a grand total of 58G0 candidates, as against 5370 for 1910. These entries aro independent of thoso for the teachers' certificate and Civil Service senior examinations in January next. Last year the total for the November-Doccm-ber-January examinations was 7553; the figures for this ycni are not yet available, but it is expected that tho total will bo over 8000. In tho Wellington Centre, for the Civil Service junior and intermediate examinations, beginning on November 21, there aro 327 candidates, of whom 251 arc didntes, and for junior free places 12C, making a total of 329.
