OTAKI NOTES.

A petition is now in circulation advocating the merging of tho Otaki Bond Board into the Horowhenua County Council. It is being largely signed. Mr. Eketone, who is contesting the seat for the Western Maori electorate, has been in Otaki addressing tho Natives. Ho was accompanied by a number of Tauranga Natives, who left yesterday morning for their respective homes. A storm, luckily of short duration; broke over the district yesterday morning, and in quick time the streets and lowlying lands were flooded. Thunder and lightning preceded and accompanied the downpour. Considerable interest was taken hers this week regarding the election of two councillors' for tho Otaki Riding, and a similar number for-the Te Horo Riding of the Horowhenua County Council. The result was that Messrs. Herbert Freeman and Arthnr Skerman were elected for the former,- and Messrs. Alex Monk and George Watson for the latter., The total voting was <is followsOtaki Ridin.*- H. Freeman, IG2: A. Skerman, 129; David Judd, 124; T. C. Jones, 111. To Horo Riding: Alex Monk, 106; Geo. Watson, 103; Geo. Catley, 100; T. H. Windley, 99. Arrangements are being made bv tho Defence Department to conduct regular weekly drills here. On Monday tho swearing-in ceremony will take place when Sergeant-Major Nicholls will be present.
