HIS DEMISE ANNOUNCED. (By Telccraoh.—Prcs9 Aesociatio*.! Greymouth, November 9. Mr. Samuel Meggitt Mackley, "th» father of the West Coast," is dead. Ho was a, native of Leeds, and arrived in Nelson in 1851. He came to tho West Coast in 1557, where in 18G0 he met Mr. James Mackay, jun., who bought from eight to ten_ million acres fram the Natives for jCI.'iO cash, a ton of flour, and half a ton of sugar. Mr. Mackay witnessed the signature, and subsequently visited Okarito, finding gold on the beach. He visited Christchureh in 1863, and wrote a letter to tho "Lyttelton Times" which caused a rush (o set in. He afterwards bought 2200 acres in the Little Grey Valley, which he improved and resided on. He visited England in ISSG, and subsequently bought 2000 acres at Pakarao, Hbvcrty Hay, but sold it recently at an enormous profit as vastly improved.
