SLY GROG-SELLING

Sir, As a resident in the Pongaroa district,' 1 would like to call the attention of the Minister of Justice to tho flagrant abuse of the law in that thriving township. There is 110 hotel nearer than Makuri, but tho sale of liquor goes on without hindrance. I was there on a reccnfc Saturday night, when the working hands were being paid, and I am in a position to know what I write about. Tho sale of liquor is carried on openly. Tho usual price for whisky is 10s. per bottle, and when supplies aro scarce it rurui up to 15s. and 20s. The town is full of sly grog-shops. Drunkenness and obscone language is the order of, the day in Pongaroa. There is a local constable, but ho does not seem to be able to catch the offenders. It nays people to bring in supplies, which they buy wholesale in Pahtatua, and sell at a profit of lis. or fis. per bottle. The Inspector Of Police should visit tho district, and try and wipe out this'den nf iniouity. or perhaps if, would bo better if lie were to appoint some .young oflireri to take file matter in hand. Tt is not' fair 'to; send old men wlia are getting near the end of their service to cope with tho' sly grogcr.s.—l aiii, etc.. . ; V ' ( I'OJCGAItOA. Pongaroa. Xovember fi.
