TOWN PLANNING
Sir,—With reference to the coramumcavespsiid'ent • on his own- showing ''"L 11 "' attend my. recent lecture on lon ft Plan- ■ 5iS« " " id, in consequence, is t himself .ruiitv of circulating some very inexact ,ri missions." Let " lc J ,lst sa / th, lU'Leod is acting under nn cxtraorc linaiy misconception as to what was illustrate. The administration of 11 n a iiiai was not in any ■ way questioned .ot • the lecture. Mr. 31'Leod ought to Know '■better than to assume that any condensed report of a lecture so complex nnd varied could possibly convey tho tacts as .thry .were given irom the Uf. 'tfLeUd lias Simply got hold ot ho ■tfiiiik end of the sticV," and l am Hire it lie had done me the honour to listen to Hio (li«cour-e lie would have seen that the vemar£r t U*rning SOft. frontages (and 'under) had reference, to lulbirme Tlat "LefmHult add tl,at whilst I made it 'clear the municipality lias done a great (leal in its power to save Mirninni from the greed of tho commercial suburb, maker, from a town-planning pmnt ol view it is, with all its reserves its wide streets, and not omitting its ten miles of beaches," a conspicuous example -ot how not to do it. Miriunar is, as I stat- . cd at my lecture, only a mild illustration of what is happening not only in \\ cllington, but on the outskirts of a" our large towns and cities. Had tho big suburb been developed on town-plannmg lines, acres of parks and reserves, occupyin» valuable frontages in some cases, and row upon row of building sections in between would not have been found, instead there would bo each group of houses with its open spaces ami its allotment <*ardens. tlorues would have boon built morn economically, an industrial district would have been allocated, squates, '"anion spaces, tree-lined avenues, school grounds, sites for public buildings, and ;shops' placed at centres most convenient to the residents would have been provided for amongst other things. Moreover, instead of the enormous increase in tho laud values of Miramar in recent years finding its way largely into the (rackets or individual speculators, it. would have been secured for the benefit of the wholo community. Mr. M'Lcoil, in common, with others', would have learned liow this could he if lie had come to my lecture, instead of misunderstanding so badly the statements that were made there.-I am. etc., CII.ATiLES C.
