PEDIGREE SHORTHORNS.

THE STATE'S PURCHASES. The nine pedigree Shorthorn heifers and two bulls which arrived from Sydney last week to the order of tho Government are destined for the Wercroa Slate farm. The cattlo are now on Somes Island and at tho termination of tht?ir period of quarantine thoy will bo. railed (o Levin. The stock is lrom Hie Illawarra milking Short- , horn strain. ' When Mr. Drysdale, manager of the State- Farm, was in Now South Wales ' recently he was so taken with the well- ! known" South Coast milking Shorthorns 1 that ho recommended the Government to , secure a shipment, as ho considered that Ihey would be very suitable to certain j pares of the Dominion. The brcc-d has . lor many years past held a wide reputation as deep milkers, and being true to type. It is claimed that as the result of : careful selection and judicious mating of sires and dams of the milking type of the , breed, the milking Shorthorn typo has ; been fixed, and tho breed being pure, the , cattle aro prepotent, and beget animals ; true to type. The milking Shorthorn ; strains of the South Coast cattle have been bred lot so long on strict miiking ' lines that they are not only big yielders, . but show very little tendency to body qualities. Two bulls and nine heifers in question ■ all como from the one stud, Darbalara, the propc-rty of ths Scottish Investment , Company, near Gundagai. The stock are a very even lot, and, although from tho one estate, the two bull? belong to en- j tircly different families. Tho young bull, l'utterworth, is by the famous champion ' at Sydney for thy last two shows. Jim- 1 blem of Darbalara, a specimen of tlia breed that has secured a host of ad•Hirer.-, ior ho is taui lo be almost a perfect type. Butterworth is about two years old, and his mother was a very line cow of the good old milking Shortliorn type. Itoth she and Emblem are roans, but Buttcrworth is a red and white. Ho is a very promising youngster, a bit small lor his age, but a real good dairy type of line quality, and should make a nigh-ch.-s dairy sire. The other bull, Meiba's Prir.v, i* four years old, and by Combat, of Colcville, to he is carrying first-class blood. Llis dnm, Jlelba 111, is raid to bo -j 11 o of the b;st cows in the Darbalara '■lcnl, and te.«ti very high. After three months in calf she gave 5711b. of milk in a day, testing 4.3 per cent., equal to !!.7Glb.. or at the rate of 19.321b. of butter per week. Meiba's Prince is a roan bull of good quality, a strong, vigorous type, coming from very good milking strains. Th~ heifers are mostly roans of tho true dairy type, with several generations of ancestors behind him of the old Illawarra silking Shorthorn cattle. The different sires represented include Trenton, Banker 11, Playboy, and Abraham, while the mothers were chosen on account of the milking qualities of their dams and grand-dams. Perhaps one of tho best heifers in the lot is Violo VIII, a dark roan, by Abraham I, dam Violo 111. An Australian considers that altogether they are a very even lot, and while it is difficult to judge voting heifers that have never had a calf, on their appearance and breeding they should provo a good investment.

Chick-rearing is not oniir profitable, but a pleasure, when you teed "A. anil I'." Chick Raiser. It is a complete and properly-blended food for Young Chicks, Obtainable from all storekeepers,—Advt,
