The twentieth annual snow of tlio ttaikato Agricultural aiid l'nstoral .Associa-, tioiv was opened to-day in Hamilton in Imo weather, and witn a largo attenuance ot the general public irom all parts ot tlio district. The snow in every respect' roilccts tlio steady growth of the Waisato as the duel siuCit centra of Auckland 1 province, and, witli tew exceptions, tho 'quality of the exhibits was or an order w/iicli could hold its own in any showring in New Zealand. The entries gen-: eraily were a record, tho number K*uig approximately 1750, or fully 100 more tuiin those of last year. The feature of' the show was tho horse exhibit, which totalled 754. The light horso division was an especially strong class. Another feature of interest was the show of dairy cattle, act there was also a big entry of 81 in the fat sheep division (29 in Koinney Marsh, 24 in English Leicesters, 14 in Liucolns, and 14 in Southdown). Pigs number 57. Championships were awarded as follow:— Thoroughbred light horse—R. M'Carthy. Speaking of the sliov/ generally, Mr. E. Clilton, of the Government Agricultural Department, stated that it had developed well of recent years, with special reference to the dairy classes, which, in quality, if not numerically, were of a bHi order. He thought that mention might bo made of Ruby's Buttercup, the champion Jersey cow, which was bred by Mr. C. Day, and which was an animal of tho highest type. He regretted that. Mr. Day was not "an exhibitor at the present show.' Holsteins were also a very good section, showing the measure ol' their appreciation now in Now Zealand. Mr. Gilling's champion, Queen. Marv was a verv handsome animal, and of the best, standard. Mr. Clifton went on to sov that now at the Waikato show they 'miscd the great competition which formerly existed amongst the large estate companies of the district, but whicli now had been replaced by the dairyman and j : small settler, who, indeed, wero working | ■upwards, most notably in. the'quality of ; their stock. In the shoop sections Mr. | Clifton thought, that Ilomueys were well represented. Messrs.. Goodwin Bros.' Eng-* i lisn Leicester ram was nlso deserving of i mention. The season's late spring had interfered somewhat with the appearance i of some of the stock. : A noticeable fdature in connection with the show is the number of judges ap- i pointed from the Wellington and ; Ilawke's Bay provinces. Mr. K. J. Dagg, i of is judging draught horses; Mr. W. Cooper, of Mastorton, roadsters, and hackneys; Mr. W. D. Watson, of Masterton, light carriage and harness horses; Mr. G. L. Sunderland, of Hawks's ( Bay. hunting competitions; Mr. J. Dixon, of Hawke's Bay, Shorthorn, Angus, and Grovo cattle; Mr. S.' R. Lahcaster, of Pal- ' merston North, Jersey cattle; Mr. Stand- j en, of Feilding, dairy cattle; Mr. W. 1 Gibson, of Feilding, Lincoln, Leicester, 1 and Romney sheep. { Mr. Dagg remarked that the draughts j were a real good line, tho fillies being tho bost he had seen for years, and quito ' equal to tho Otago prize winners. 1 Mr. Dixon declared that, although the I Shorthorns wore numerically- small, with j little competition, (heir quality was well ! up to that of Hawke's Bay. He classed 1 Mr.' Taylor's champion bull as a real beauty. 1 The Jerseys, said Mr. Lancaster, were a- S good ontry with good qniility. In a gen- I eral sense, h-j confirmed Mr. Clifton's ' opinion regarding Ruby's Buttercup,, tho' 1 champion Jersey cow, which he thought • good enough toi exhibit in any show' ring ( in New Zealand. j Mr. Standen thonght the dairy heifers i vor.y good, especially with reference to ' Jerseys, and also Holsteins. Tho cham- ' pion dairy cow was of very lino quality, f Some of the Holsteins wero of exception- t ablo quality. i The whole of the arrangements of the » show are being excellently managed by 1 ths secretary and a hard-working committee.
