WANGANUI WHARF WORK.
DEPARTMENT'S ULTIMATUM. (By Telegraph—Proas Association.) " Wanganui, November 3. Wanganui, which is in tho throes of tho officers strike, is about to undorgo another—this time at the hands of the Government. About eighteen months ago the Hon. J. A. Millar promised tho waterside workers an increaso of twopence per ton in handling cargo. Tho Railway Department carries out work on tho wharf for the board. Tho Wanganui Board, however, refused to pa- an increase, and negotiations have been going on since the ■board's ultimatum to tho Department (in Jnauary last), stating that it would take over the work. The last communication to the Department was through the board's solicitors over three months ago, and tho solicitors yesterday received a reply to the effect that tho Department would cease to work the wharf on November 11—a short notice of one week—unless a satisfactory arrangement was arrived at.
Tho board is holding a special meeting to-morrow.
