WELLINGTON NORTH.

MR. E. J. CAREY AT KELBURNE. The electors of Kelburne wore addressed lust evening by Mr. K. J. Carey, Labour candidate for Wellington North. Mr. G. Lester presided. Through some misunderstanding the hall was not availablo and the candidate spoke in the open air. lie apologised for being unable to accommodate his nudicnco comfortably, said that the mistako was no fault of his, and undertook that at a later date the electors of that part would lie given a chance to hear him indoors. He urged the electors to give (he Labour candidates a chauco to prove that they were equally competent with their fellows in Australia to legislate for, and manage tho affairs of, their country. He dealt at length with several planks of tho Labour party's platform, referring specially to monopolies. Ho argued that the best way to kill monopoly was by State enterprise* and competition. There were many monopolies operating in this country of which people were not fully cognisant. The present Government.was afraid to interfere with vested interests. It was purely a commercial Government and the ' working classes were sacrificed to Ihe interests of the shareholders in tho banking and commercial concerns of this country.

Asked if a Labour candidate would vote against the Government on a no-con-fidence motion Mr. Carey said that it would depend upon the principle involved. The party stood for measures aud not for men. Whether a pr.oposal was made by the Government or by the Opposition the. Labour candidate would voto on it according to the party's platform.
