St. Paul's Sale of Work. The annual sale oi work and entertainment in connection with St. Paul's parish, Thorndon, will be opened this afternoon by Mrs. Sprott. The stallhoMers wore very btt?y yesterday getting everything in readiness for the sale, which promises to be n most successful one. Buyers will have a great variety to select from, including plain and fancy work, sweets, toys, works of art. provisions, and flowers. A feature of tho sale is a unique basket, stall, containing over ono hundred baskets of all shapes and sizes, made out of dainty white and brown cane, and there will also bs a Christmas treu, a bran tub, and a jumble stall. An exceptionally good entertainment will be given each night, for which the members of the Church of England Men's Society have made themselves responsible. Tho sale will bo open to-day and to-morrow, afternoon and evening. Palmerston North News. Tho great show week has como round once more, and tho town is ranidlv filliii" with visitors. Tfco hotels and boardingnouios are full to overflowing, and nearly overyono has visitors for the show. A very enjoyable dance was got up last week by a committee of ladies, of whom Mrs. L. Abraham was secretary, -ind Airs. 11. F. Gibbons, treasurer. The Municipal Hall was very effectively decorated with arum lilies and bamboo, and tlio supper-room was made very pretty with quantities of narcissi and long spray's of wlnto banksia rose. Among the committee, Mrs. L. Abraham wore a handsome black gown, relieved with lovely old lace; Mrs. Itibbons was also in black, with very pretty gold embroideries; Mrs. Putnam wore blue chiffon over silk, trimmed with bauds of beautiful Irish lace; Mrs. Louisson, old gold satin, -with black embroideries. Others present wero Mrs. Harold Cooper, in delicate shade of pinkMrs. Wilfrid Colbeck (Auckland), lovely chiffon gown, with shot effects; Mrs. A. Holmes, white and gold; Mrs. Stedman, pretty pale blue; Miss Sylvia Abraham, becoming gown of black chiffon; Mi<s Cobb (Otaki); Miss Sybil Abraham, pretty fjrecu chiffon with crystal trimming"-; Miss Barber, soft white salin with trimmings of lovely iace; ilisjes Dundas, Watson, Robinson, Collins, and Lyons, and Messrs. Murray, Gardner, M'Donnld, Bkickmore, D. Putnam, and D. Stowe. Miss Lloyd (Auckland) is visiting her mother, and Miss Waller, also from Auckland, is also Mrs. Lloyd's guest for tho show. Mi;s Robertson (Dannevirke) is spending a few days with Mrs. Coombs. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfrid Cclbcck arc at tho Grand Hotel. Mrs. Higginson has returned from n visit to tho Wairarapa. Miss F. Randolph leaves this week for a visit to her sister, Mrs. Bayly, in Christchurch. Mrs. E. Newbigin, Hawko's Bay, .is in town. Mrs. Fitchott leaves for tho south this evening, and will be joined by Dr. Fitchett later on. Mrs. Miller, the wife of Mr. T. Miller, manager of the Bank of Australasia in Duncdin, arrived yesterday on a visit to her father, Mr. John Dutliie, of the Hutt. Members of the Pioneer Club are entertaining tho ladies taking part in the New Zealand competitions, now being held in the Town Hall, on Friday afternoon next at half-past threo in tho club rooms. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Clifford leavo for Christchurch this week. Miss M'Dougall has returned to Pirinba after a brief visit to Wellington. The engagement, is announced of Miss M. Hills, eldest daughter of Mrs. Hills, Wellington, to Mr. T. Quayle, of the Isle of Man. Mrs. Mauricp Richmond is expected in Wellington this week from the south. ,Mr. Newman, M.P., Mrs., and Miss Newman have returned to Turakina. A sale of work iu aid of the Presbyterian Orphanage is to be opened in Fullford's Hall, Brooklyn, this afternoon. Miss Amy Sutton is visiting friends in Now Plymouth. Miss Frogatt (Invercargill), who has been the guest of Mrs. Childs, in Wellington, is now on a visit to relatives on tha West Coast. Mrs. English (Hamilton) arrives in town to-day on her way ssuth, and will stay, while in Wellington, with Mrs. Sutton. (May Street). Visitors stayina at the Empire Hotel include:—Sir Robert and Lady Lcckhart (Auckland), Mrs. nud Miss Ivimcy (Dunedin), Mrs. and Miss Hirschborg (Masterton), Mr. and Mrs. Robinson (Sydney), Mr. and Mrs. H. Wright (Patea), Mr. and Mrs. E. Cameron (Hinakura), and Mr. Harold Gregson (Auckland).
Tho concert programme in connection with St. Mark's parish annual sale of work to be held on Thursday and Friday next in St. Mark's Schoolroom, is bein"" arranged by Miss D. Hurley,-and will ii£ chide club-swinging by a squad of Mr. J. W. M. Harrison's pupils, songs and recitations, etc., contributed by Miss Watkins, Dr. Norman Hale?. Messrs. Ward, Tassie, Ferguson and Nelson, also attractive items by St. Mark's choir boys, and the Young Men's Club. Mr. Frank Arasden is accompanist."
Many people will regret to hear of the death of Miss Ledger, Hie eldest daughter of Mr. H. 0. Ledg'ET. which took pl'.-ico very suddenly at Nelson on October 20. It was only on October 10 that the death took place of Mrs. Ledger, and ranch sympathy will bo felt for Mr. Ledger and his family for this double berravement , . Mrs. Ledger was a sister of Mrs. T. Ward and Mrs. Ponsonby, of Wellington.
