SNATCHED FROM THE RIVER.
A TIMELY PESCUE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganiii, October 28. A somewhat exciting incident was witnessed off Putiki this morning. Three Maori men were in a canoo which, by somo means, overturned. The river, being considerably swollen by recent rains, was running very fast, and the canee (ravelled down simian at a rapid rate. One of the men, who had saved his paddle, made strenuous efforts to head it into the bank, but without much success. The men's plight was fortunately observed from Putiki, and a man put out single handed in a boat to tho rescue. lie came up with the overiurnc<l canoe off Cionville, and, getting the throe Maoris aboard, managed to land them safely on tho Putiki side, though a good way lielow the pa. The canoe continued its" courso down tho river, and was soon lost to sight.
