THE CHURCH AND THE POOR.
In laying the foundation-stone of the new Cliurea of the Sacred Heat at Sydney, Archbishop Jvelly made reference to the Church's relation to Socialism. Jlc said: "The Socialists say, 'You Archbishops have your residence at Manly, and wo do not see you going amongst the poor and emptying your pockets to them. It is a fool who would go amongst the poor doing this; ho would simply be giving them shillings to bring to the nearest hotel. J3ut do we not give to the poor? Do the Socialists go to the poor as often as do tho Brothers of tho Society of St. Vincent do Paul ? Not they. Do the Socialists open hospitals like St. Vincent's, near by, and maintain them Not they. Someone must do it for them. Then tlie Socialists say, 'You are indifferent to the poor, you are against them, and are all for tho rich.' Wo are for nobodv, and aro against nobody; we aro for alt But wo say there is justice bo 1m done to the poor and the rich. The poor indeed are our friends; they form the body of our Church."
