MR. CHURCHILL AND THE NAVY.
# A GREAT OPPORTUNITY. EXPECTANCY AS TO HOW HE WILL USE IT. RUMOURS OF A CHANGE. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright 1 (Rec. October 25, 11.15 p.m.) London, October 24. The concensus of opinion is that Mr. Winston Churchill, by his transfer from tho Homo Office to the Admiralty, has been given a great opportunity, and there is much expectancy as to how ho will uso it. Mr. Churchill is known to favour the construction of battleships of tho King ! Edward VII class in preference to Dread--1 noughts. | "Tho Times" states that Mr. Churchill 1 has latterly shown an appreciation of the ■ vital necessity of maintaining tho Navy at an unquestionable strength. It hopes i that ho will not bo behind his predecessor in maintaining its efficiency. The "Morning Post" (Unionist) says : that Mr. Churchill's appointment is an • indication that the Government is begin- ' ning to recognise the extreme urgency of national defence. It eulogises Mr. Churchill's abilities and strength of purpose. Tho King Edward VII type of battleship has a. displacement of 1G,300 tons, and an armament of four 12-mch guns, four 9.2 in. guns, ten 0-inch guns, fourteen 12-poumlefs, and 17 small guns. 1 his 1 trpa was followed by the Lord Nelsons with a main armament of four 12-mch guns, and ten 9-inch guns. Then came tho Dreadnought, with a main armament of ten 12-inch guns.
