MACHINE V. HAND-MILKING.

t I AN AUSTRALIAN OPINION. T U the close of an article published in r the "Agricultural Gazette" of New South , Wales, on the machine v. tho hand- ' milker, Mr. J. G. M'Millan, Dairy Jnj structor at the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, states the following general conl elusion::—(1) That machiue-milkiug, in the hands of a capable operator, may bo f considered as successful as the best averr age hand-milking. (2) That tho now of s milk is not appreciably decreased when . machine-milking is substituted for handmilking, excent in isolated cases. W) tj That the period of lactation is not sliort toned. (I) That subsequent periods of I lactation are not adversely affected. (•">) t That the composition of milk as regards 0 solids is not lowered. (0 That cows 1 are no mere subject to udder troubles s than when milked by hand, if machines are iiroporly eared for. (7) That tho milk is cleaner ami purer if the machines arc * kept as they should be. (8) That machinemilking is cheaper than hand. An improvement might be made, says Mr. M'Millan. so that by some automatic arrangement the amount of milk from each cow could be recorded with less trouble than is now tho case with (he double machine. On account of the time required in weighing the milk with double ! " machines, h« advises tho uso of the single ■' milkers, believing that tho process can 1- be done more quickly. r " Finally, he strongly advises that in 11 workin? milking machines tho owner of 13 the dairy or some interested person should r " be in control; otherwise the best results V T will not be obtained. A dairyman should ' also be extremely cautious in allowing in•v renters of new machines to experiment 10 upon his cows. 10
