CHESTNUTS.
A QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. 1 Thousands of valuable old trees are ■ stated to bo dying in America every vear, and all efforts to save them are • said to have failed, although hundreds of thousands of dollars have been expended » in tho attempt. Hearing this in mind, ! Mr. Ilognn, M.P., asked tho Minister for Agriciiltiii-o whetivr ho will instituic ' inquiries as to what countries, if any, - chestnut trees are being imported from; ■ and (2) will ho take steps to, prevent in--1 portation from countries in ' which the I chestnut tree disease exists. In reply the ' Minister states that imported plants cf every kind arc carefully examined for ' disease before being admitted into the ', Dominion. Very few, if any, chestnut f plants are imported into New Zealand, ' practically all those required being grown ' locally. Ilowever, the question of adding 1 the disease referred to to (lie schedule J under the Orchard and Garden Diseases I. Act will be gone into, with a view to excluding chestnut trees from being laud- \ ed iu New Zealand from America.
