APPOINTMENT OF CLERGY.
AND TILE RIGHTS OF THE LAITY. (By TolcgraDli.—Press Association.) Auckland, October 24. A discussion regarding a proposal (o givo the bishop of tho dioeeso a seat on the Board of Nominators (by which the pastors of parishes are appointed) took piaco at the An.glie.nn Diocesan Synod today. Under t-lio present constitution of the New Zealand Church, the bishops have no peats on these boards. In a motion brought forward to-day by Archdeacon Willis it was proposed that the General Synod should be asked to alter the cancv.is so that tho bishop should bo chairman of (ho board. Tho motion was strongly opposed l\v several lay member, and one or two clerical members of tho Synod, it being held that it was an encroachment upon the rights of tho laity. Bishop Cross-Icy said that whilst he did not approve of the present system ho was not aware that the motion was to ho brought forward. Ho would prefer that tilie matter should bo deferred till next year. After discussion, tho motion was withdrawn and it was resolved that tho standing committee should report upon the .matter next year.
