THE MERCHANT SERVICE TROUBLE.

#. THE LATEST PHASE. It will probably be three weeks beforo there will be anything further to report in connection with the dispute between the Merchant Service Guild and the Union Company, and it does not seem likely that the coastal shipping (roublo will bo settled before the case of the officers on the larger vessels is determined.

The proposals submitted by the owners at the recent sittings of the Conciliation Council in Dunedin are being submitted to the officers of the Guild by circular, for tho very good reason that it is impossible lo assemble them at <1 meeting. They will declaro their opinions as to whether the proposals ought to be accepted or rejected, and (hen presumably ono side or the other will act.

The wages oll'ered are the same as thoso fixed for similar vessels on Ihe Australian coast by the Commonwealth award, but the other proposes aro not so favourable to the men as those which Mr. Justice Higgins gave. l''or instance, t.lio Union Company refuse to pay overtimo to officers. The position may possibly be affected by the result of the seamen's dispute, which will be heard in Wellington shortly. Report has it that they may strike if they fail to secure the conditions for which they intend to ask.
