THE TURF.

6 FACING AT TRENTHAM. SECOND DAY. RACE FOR THE CHAMPION PLATE. WON BY BYRON. DEELEY RIDES THREE WINNERS. Yesterday was a rod letter day in. tho history of tho Wellington Racing Club, tor not only did it mark tho biggest return ever recorded by the club's totalisatoT, but it closed tho most successful spring meeting ever hold in the district. In tho years during which tho race meotings wore hold at the Hutt ill-fortune dogged tho club, but when operations veto femoral to Trenlham everything changed for tho totter, and under the .ablo management of the present secretary (Mr. A. E. Wnyte), tho club has made rapid advancement in the last few years. For the meeting just concluded, the .weather conditions could scarcely havo beon improved upon, and yesterday large holiday crowds wore attracted to the course. The result was the excellent tctalisator return of X2fi,371, which made a total of .£-10,323 for the two days, as against ,£24,121 10s. for the two days last year, when, however, bookmakers' fees amounted to .£673. The grounds wore again in fine order, and tho racing track provided capital going. Great interest centred in the Champion Plate, for which a high-class field went to tho post, and tho race was the best seen since tho inclusion of this event on. tho programme. It is not every day that a donor of a handsome trophy has the peculiar satisfaction of winning it himself, yet this occurred yesterday, Trtien the Champion Plate of -WO sovs. (300 sovs. and a very .substantial and beautifully-designed silver cup, rallied at 100 sovs.) was annexed bv Mi. G. D. Greenwood, of Canterbury, through the agency of his bay colt Byron. At the conclusion of this finely-contested event Byron was introduced to tho admiring crowd on tho lawn before the grandstand, where a pleasing little ceremony was 'enacted. The cup, which had been exhibited throughout tho afternoon 'on a table in the Governor's box, was shown to the blowing colt, amidst applause. "Good man, Greenwood!" shouted a voice as the well-known owner mounted the steps to the.box, where Mr. J. B. - Harcourt (president of tha Wellington Racing Club), in a confidential little speech, which could not be heard by the crowd, congratulated tho winner on securing the magnificent cup, which he had bo generously, donated. The cup was then formally presented to Mr. Greenwood by Miss Hiarcourt. At the call of the president, threo hearty cheers were given for Mr. Greenwood, rrko smilingly declined to mako a speech urgently called for by members of the public. When tho cup was given to tho club last year Mt. Greenwood left it to the stewards to decide how it should bo allotted, and they ordained that it was to go with the Champion Plate. So it camo nbout that the trophy -was won by its donor. '.There wero again several accidents in tho Steeplechase, and two of tho jockeys (R. Thompson and H. Tclford) sustained ' fractured collarbones. A feature of the day's raring was the form shown by tho Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, who rode three winners. Time, lmin. 16 Wscc. NOTES ON THE RACING. Birkline, who had competed in the open race on tho first day, was niado a bettor lavounte than Patriotic in the Tararua Handicap. Both carried a lot of money, tho betting being larger than is usual on the opening event. Patriotic, who was again nicely handled by ' B. Deeley won with very little effori, Birklme and Sir Solo had a good set-to for second money, the former, on ™. e "J-nde, gaining the place. Kina and ttig Blast, who mado tliu pace warm for the first five furlongs, tired rapidly in the straight. Astonishment fell shortly oMr m art, au(l M< Bon "J<l. rider oi Big Blast, was reported by the- starter in connection with tho accident. Tho stewards learned that M'Donald had lo«t iiis stirrup iron just before tho accident, and exonerated him from blamo in. tho Jan, who had finished second to Ermengarde in tho Welleslcy Stakes, was withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap on account of soreness, and her stable companion, Champagne, carried Mr BncMey 3 colours. Trireme, from tho Chokeboro stable, was made a warm favourite, but never heM a winni™ position, and finished with Monolino just outside a place. Monoline showed a lot of pacq but was too. small to fight out the finish with her bigger rivals. Champagne, a lwh-brother tu Oiyoi, seemed to navo tho race won when Bandore camo Tilth a great finish, and secured a length ™j r & ?. andoro a »tl Eocene, who carr? 11 -D e c lv s rarau colours, aro both by Cold Reef from Birkenhcad mares. Tho Spring Trial Stakes was considered m M i ! sL ts l? !i; , l or Oration . "ho carried over 1000 tackets on the machine. The only other horses supported to any extent were Kirkby and Kingswell. Tho public judgment proved correct, for Ovsttion, after tailing the field in tho early stages, came on the outside at tho homo bend, and won comfortably, Kingswell .oneo again filling second place. Kirkby after getting away well, dropped back to the rear of the fiold, but finished stron"A good deal of interest was taken away from the Pcarco Handicap by the withdrawal of Iranui, Goodwin Park, Parable, and St. Petersburg. With these defections, Sir Tristram was made a good favourite, with Bracken next in demand. A. beautiful start was effected, but beforo going a hundred yards, the field commenced to string out, Medallist settinc a very solid pace in front. Bracken headed tho rest of tho field in a hopeless endeavour to overhaul Medallist, who maintained his lead of two lengths until tho judge's box was readied. Medallist was close up, third, in tho Selling Race after having had a very bad passage. In different company yesterday ho had 261b. less to carry, and, in addition, ho seemed to have improved with the first day's race. Bracken, carrying Mb. overweight, rah ono of his best races, but 3 Sir Tristram and Vootgajig scarcely ran up to expectations. Epsom Lass, who • was tailed off at one. part of the race, • finished well, just behind tho placed • horse.;. Of tho twelve starters in the second '• Steeplechase, only fivo completed tho course- Salopian, Nedra, and Westward fell, and Thompson and Telford (tho ridT ore of the two first-named) both sustain- • oil fractured collarbones. Gleninore won !- quite easily after Nedra fell, and would ■" probably have won even had the latter r got round safely. Kiro Atu, who finished 0 second, appeared to be hopelessly out of 11 it half a mile from home, but O'Neill s rude a very vigorous finish, and passed. Tyrannic after the last hurdle. Riro Atu, „ besides gaining second money, paid e. ' havdsome dividend. 0 There was spirited betting in the Champion Plate, Miscount and Equitas both being very heavily supported, while Byron, Elcctrakoff, ami Boanerges all ca'r--1 riod money. Mr. O'Connor effected a beautiful start in front of the stand, and • the six candidates raced, for th? first „ twenty or thirty yards practically in a '' line. Then Equitas rushed to tho front, !. and set a very solid p:\ce, getting a break t- of about three lengths on tho field. Sho t- covered tho first six furlongs of the 1. journey in lmin. 10 l-sscc., and, as shc_

etill had a load when tho straight was being entered, thero was great epcculation as to whether or not she. would seo the journey out. When tackled by ElectrakoiF, Byron, and Miscount, tho Advance mare contested every inch of tho finish, but in the end she. was hen ten into third place, though lint n length from tho winner. Considering the fact that her preparation bos bten confined to sprint work, and that she was only just beaten by the two three-year-olds, the honours of the race wore undoubtedly with her. Still, both Byron and Miscount.appeal to bo three-year-olds of chss, and, when they meet tho other Derby candidates at Riccarton next month, good racing should result. In tho Ruahino Handicap it was again demonstrated that the hoi>o drawing No. 1 position at the five-fnrloug start has a marked advantage. Emma, who drew tho position, had practically a two lengths' break on tho field, and, as she is in capital condition just now, sho easily maintained it until the finish. Makara finished secoud, and thus, in three starts, won one race aud was second in the other two. He was a warm favourite in yesterday's event. Our Queen was also well backed, but again, failed to gain a place. Though there were IS starters in tho Nai Nai Handicap, the public did not hesitate to make Nyland a pood favourite. Their judgment proved correct, for the big son of Finland was in front when the judge's box was reached. Tho finish was somewhat sensational, for Nyland, after getting well away, lost his position, and appeared to be blocked at the home turn. Oliver, however, kept him on the rails, and, finding an opening half-way up tho straight, rushed him through, aud had tho race won about 20 yards from the post. Lady Moutoa ran a creditable second, while Vibration, St. Toney, and British Maid all shaped well. Winning' jockeys at the meeting were:— B. Deeley, four; A. Oliver, three; R. Thompson, R. Gray, C. Price, W. Price, F. E. Jones, L. Wilson, H. Watson, M M'DonuJd, and R. Hatch. WINNING OWNERS.
